Personally I don't care for classifications, but in the general way people do categorise bands I'd have said Bon Jovi were Rock/Rock'n'Roll, never really Hard Rock, even with some of the stuff from Keep The Faith or These Days.
I think that albums like Slippery When Wet and Crush are more Rock'n'Roll than Rock, and personally I do think that there is a distinction between the categories. I see Rock'n'Roll as the early stuff from the 50's/60's, Chuck Berry, The Beatles, Elvis etc. To me Rock is 70's/80's stuff mostly, Led Zepplin, Aerosmith, Bruce Springsteen, Queen etc.
I think that the best example of a recent Rock'n'Roll song is Captain Crash, I think it's quite a fun song and really sounds Rock'n'Roll. There are songs on Crush and Bounce which I'd say were more Pop, such as Misunderstood, or more Pop/Rock would be Everyday, but even on those albums I think there's songs like One Wild Night which sound more 80's, like the "old" Bon Jovi. I think they tried to sound tougher on Bounce with songs like Hook Me Up and The Distance and whereas I like them I do think they are quite Pop/Rock.
I think that Have A Nice Day sounds a bit like some of the Crush and Bounce stuff but, and I've only heard the single, not been after snippets of the new stuff, I think it sounds more like the "old" Bon Jovi in terms of it sounds more agressive and they sound more passionate with it.
Feel free to dis-regard what I've said, it's 3am and my head is hardly clear, and I know someone will disect my post to tell me how wrong I am but I don't care. As I said I don't like classifications. To me Bon Jovi is Bon Jovi, just like Aerosmith is Aerosmith and Bruce is Bruce etc etc.
All artists change, their writing styles change, otherwise they'd get boring writing the same stuff again and again. I still like some of the music Bon Jovi produce, which is why I still "follow" the band. I don't know why some people here still do though when they haven't liked the bands music for 10 years, along with complaining about the shows and blah blah blah
I don't post nor even look in the Bon Jovi section of this site too often anymore because of the constant moaning and argueing. I know that we shouldn't all agree or like everything they put out, but argueing about things you don't even like seems like a pathetic waste of time.
