For someone who actually likes She Don't Know Me, that's a pretty damn good statement!

Punk rock as in music genre didn't die (although there aren't any real punk bands left, it's all hardcore or pop punk or something like that). The punk movement died. Much like disco as a music genre didn't die, but you don't have discothèques or travoltas walking around.

The Anti Nowhere League is still around touring steadily and they still kick ass. They played London last week and if that's not REAL punk than you have no idea what real punk is.

The Pogues are still on tour for ****'s sake. Can't wait to see them in December. And there's plenty of mohawks in most major cities of this planet (unlike Travoltas walking around).

But yeah, just like usually, in Iceman land Iceman is never wrong!

You still have squats with bands playing, I'd say that's as close to the "old days" you're ever gonna get. Especially regarding the US. You don't have the Pistols playing on the BBC anymore, but I'd argue that doesn't exactly hurt the genre. And like DS said, mohawks, safety pins and all that jazz are still around. Plus there's the follow-ups... ah, I'll get to that in a second.

And if you limit punk to the 70s sound, that's weird (hardcore that isn't entirely metal infused actually shares a lot of both sonic, history and attitude with punk), but there's still enough bands with that sound. But that's like saying anything that doesn't follow a blues progression isn't rock & roll. Or, regarding fashion, anyone who doesn't dress in 60s flower clothes doesn't dress rock & roll.

A genre can progress, evolve, but that doesn't change the original. But that's beside the point. Punk was more than a music genre, more than mohawks. And that punk is not here any more, no matter what old geezers still play the same music. The attitude, the grit, the anger is gone. I'm not sure if there's a need or even a place for that anymore, but all the same, it's not around. Much like the original rock'n'roll attitude isn't around anymore either, there's no real rebellion against the society or the parents or what ever it was back then. The music's still around, but the movement isn't.

And I never really regarded what the Americans did as punk. It was more like bubble gum pop. I still love The Ramones, but I wouldn't call that music punk.
