80s rock was a continuation of 70s rock. It just added more - more cheese, more keys, more echo on the snare... in the 90s, it was more of a counter-sound. It didn't exactly expand upon the blueprint. Lots of 70s acts still survived in the 80s (Cheap Trick and Kiss, to name two), but the 90s gave 80s acts a hard time.

It really was quite different in terms of being "new".

That's an interesting way of looking at it. I've always looked at it as if the 80's were kind of a continuation of the 60's but expanding on the show and bombast of it all. And the grunge movement in the 90's were a continuation of the 70's more getting up there and jamming style that Zeppelin and sabbath had. But I guess that would depend on what band we look at from what era.....

A band like Van Halen perfectly bridged the 70s and the 80s, and like I said, a ton of 70s bands had a lot of success in the 80s as well.

But yeah, grunge (and even the punk revival) harkened back to 70s music as well. But there weren't exactly a ton of Black Sabbath clones in the 70s, and I hear quite a bit of Zeppelin in most of the bands as well, and that was more of a 60s band actually. So it's not exactly a case of "I turned on the radio and it was as if thought 20 years hadn't passed".

But as far as mainstream goes, there was more continuity going from the 70s to the 80s. Most of the hair bands also cited bands like Aerosmith, Cheap Trick, Van Halen and Kiss as influences, all 70s bands.

Then you've got bands that were already around but just copied Bon Jovi's formula such as Whitesnake, Great White, White Lion, Dokken. Even KISS, Motley, and Leppard started copying Bon Jovi's formula.

I'm not saying these band only influence was Bon Jovi, or that they even were big fans of theirs. However, they saw the formula work, saw the dollar signs, saw the girls, and went with it. You don't have to be liked to be influential.

I find it funny that the most vocal ones in this thread weren't around when Bon Jovi was big. You don't know anything, you think you do. Bon Jovi was the ****ing biggest band on earth for a brief time, much bigger than Nirvana was. Everyone wanted to be Bon Jovi. And Nirvana's legacy is all because of Kurt's suicide. Their popularity was going downhill and other bands were taking their place. For a long time, all the Nirvana news were only about Kurt messing up.

Bon Jovi influenced a LOT of bands, but that was 30 years ago. Most of the bands arn't around any more. As to Nirvana, they didn't invent anything. They did influence a lot of bands as well, but so did all the other Seattle bands. And there were many before Nirvana.

Nirvana was nominated. I'd bet my next paycheck they get in for no other reason than Kurt Cobain is dead.
Nirvana are legends - no problems with that.

But for me Bon Jovi are a bit of a mess at the moment with this whole RS thing. I think its not the right time for them at the moment.

LL Cool J - hahaha.

Unless Tempest or Michaeli listened to the first album or 7800

Kidding aside, The Final Countdown hit the shelves some 4-6 months before anything from Slippery did.

Haha, they were under a different name, though?

But yeah, you're right.
