So this kind of discussion is for contemporary witnesses only now? Boy, rock sure has become an old man's game.

You can discuss, but the ones who were there are the ones I'd believe. It's easy to say that Simon & Garfunkel were never big, when you look at it now, but in the 60s it was a different story. Or Zeppelin in the early 70s.

Nirvana's legend is much bigger than what the band was in the early 90s. And Bon Jovi were much bigger in the 80s than what it seems like now. It seems almost impossible that any band could've been that big.

So, like it or not, if you weren't there, you don't know how it was. You can accept that or not, it's up to you, but it won't change anything.

All those bands had the same influences as Bon Jovi, that's why they sound similar. They didn't pick a guitar because Bon Jovi.

Anyway, Bon Jovi influenced that 90s scene in a way as it was rebelling against the hair metal (even though Jovi´s music transcended that genre imo).
Bon Jovi wrote saturday night thinking about this song.

If BJ retired in 96, then I'd bet they would already be there. They just went downhill too much into poppyland.

Looking at some of the nominees of the past, HoF means shit. Only by looking at those lists you already know that Bon Jovi should've been there for a long time. But that's no compliment to BJ, it's just that the list sucks.

I never said they picked up a guitar because of Bon Jovi. But to say they had the same influences is wrong. Those bands were influenced by Kiss, Motley, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi. Bon Jovi was influenced by Springsteen, Thin Lizzy, Southside Johnny, Led Zeppelin.

I disagree... Here in the US they were a joke and not taken seriously at all in 96. If it wasn't for IML, they would still be the butt of every joke... at least to those who remember them. They still get little if any love from the critics, but I think they are seen in a better light. I do believe their couple hits since, and more than anything the "top tours" bit will eventually get them into the HoF.

Cobain was the anti-JBJ. He was an artist and changed rock music for the better part of the decade. Whereas Jon is (was in some cases) a very talented musician/performer and businessman who wrote songs for the times and when the times changed, he changed to stay relevant.
