Must be a completely US biased list) - yet promoters still reap the cash from them.
Once the big bands are gone, festivals will become the norm. And that trend is very much visible already.

Mainstream rock is totally dead. If you go back and view how bands once ruled the airwaves in the 70's 80's 90's and part of the 00's, you'd realize that the only modern band on this list being, Imagine Dragons, raking at number 8 on the rock chart but number 31 overall completely sucks.
I'm a part time sub in a High School and I could assure you that they don't listen to rock of any kind. It's all Rap, Rave, and Electro type tunes. I tell them that their music sucks all the time and they just don't care. It's not the art and life movement that it once was. I made them all watch the Living On The Prayer video the other day on their phones. They said "cool" and went back to their shitty music.
The stadium sellers of the future will be Jay Z, Kayne West, Justin Timberlake, maybe Beyoncé, etc.
And as far as the festival circuit goes, you have 10 bands all playing for a 30 dollar admission. How are they supposed to make real money? They might make a few hundred thousand but not the millions you see on these charts.
