He didn't mention David's name though, he just said it was about a band member who was going through a breakup (or did he use the word divorce?).

-he wrote it, I'm sure he knows what it's about.

I've heard from too many people that were there that it's about David. I don't believe for a second that it's about Richie. The whole interview, he just came across as pompous.

Yep, I was there. He just said it was a band member that was going through a divorce, now at the time that was Dave. But, in the interview he said he couldn't say anything about Richie at the time because the news wasn't public. So, I'd say he lied at Elements versus now. Also, a friend of mine who was at the Tampa show told me that Jon had made a remark about being prophetic when he wrote it and at a few shows he'd say, "the names have been changed to protect the innocent".

So, who knows.

I got the definite impression that this was done after the second show in Tokyo and that Jon was very tired and probably a bit tipsy. Still I thought there were alot of good things in the interview, especially the part about the catolog songs for Europe, looks like if Richie is healthy, you all will get some TD stuff which should make alot of you happy.

As for the stuff about who what song was for I'm guessing Jon would know who he wrote about, just because he couldn't publicly say Novocaine was for
Richie even last summer, he does say in the interview that Richie wasin denial about the whole thing, doesn't mean he was lying about any of it. Not that I don't think Jon lies, he does when he thinks it's really no ones business, or when he's protecting his friends or he just feels that it's not his place to make something public. At the end of the day Novacaine made the record because it's a great song, irregardless of who it was written for or about, and last cigarette is a very catchy, clever play on words lyrically, with a cool melody and a catchy chorus, both are songs I'm glad were written, recorded and released.

You made some good points but if it wasn't about Dave, we wouldn't have been under the impression all this time. If there's people out there that swear up and down he said Daves name then somethings messed up. If It IS about Richie, he should have just said it was fiction and kept the fans out of it.

I was under the strong, strong impression it was about David. And if it wasn't, I don't really think he had any right to say anything (unless he and Richie discussed it, which they might have, but from that interview it didn't sound like it was something he and Richie had talked about beforehand). But as far as I know, he never specifically said David.

I had a feeling when Richie's divorce went public Novocaine would turn into a Richie song. At the very least, the casual fans would think "Song about divorce. Richie got a divorce. Oh, okay, it's about Richie." because most of them wouldn't even know about David's divorce. And I thought maybe in concert Jon would switch from talking/singing to David during Novocaine to talking/singing to Richie because that would make more sense to more people. I just didn't want Jon to say it, because I was perfectly happy thinking that not only did David finally start writing for the band again, and not just b-sides even, he inspired a song too. And I like that a lot, because you know how I feel about David, and a lot of times I feel like the only one who actually thinks he's important, and this was "no, no, look, the band think he's important too, really!"

And now he did neither. And it's the Jon and Richie show again. Because that is the way of the world.

Could the others that were there please speak up about what Jon said? Based on the way he inter-acted with David during the New York show during it, it just confirms to me who it's really about. Why the hell were so many people saying afterwords that it's about David and others are saying he never said David at all. It's like a conspiricy.

I don't think he ever said it was about David specifically, it's just how things start to get around, some people assumed something strongly then they say it on a message board and some people that read it here or in another message board will state it as fact otherwise, but in the transcript I read from elements he said neither Richie nor Daves name.
