I'd heard that Bon Jovi kind of translated into good life as well. Anyway, I think it is a great name.. like Becky said it doesn't fit into a genre and that's always good. It's a name that sticks out too.. kind of like Queen did!

In French "bon" means good. Jovi doesn't mean a thing in any know language as such.

"jovi" means happy or frienddly even in English(abbreviated of course)

I remember in some language Jovi is the name for JUPITER and in some other language "jovi" or something similar means KING.
I did that research a while ago. Back then Bon Jovi were the best band in the world and anyone would have put them above WHITESNAKE or ANTHRAX...well times have changed.Bon Jovi suck,no one puts them above anyone and I don't give a shit on their name!

Am I alone in not getting all this? I mean, Bon Jovi comes from a surname. So, I don't think they gave it a second thought to whether it could mean this or that. The intention behind the change was that it didn't sound so very Italian, that's all. I don't think they did it to fit a given meaning. If it does, it's pure coincidence - and it seems it doesn't. What's all the research for? Good life, jovial, jupiter... who cares?

Or am I missing something?

i think you're overanalysing things too much. a band can do well no matter what the name.

i like the name, the only thing that offends me is that since its jon's surname, a lot of people think its a singer and not a band, and they totally ignore richie and the others... or they think Bon Jovi is a singer that always has the same band with him.

There are stories about David Lee Roth getting compliments like "Good show, Van!" etc. So it's not unheard of.

Using Jon's surname was the only way the record company would go for a band instead of signing Jon solo. They wanted him to be a solo artist, but used his last name to capitalize on the success of "Runaway" which came before the band. We rarely all agree on this board about anything, but I think we could agree that Bon Jovi sounds better than Johnny Lightening which they tried to make him use. LOL

I think so too. It started as a name and later on the fans or other people started to search meanings for the words. Just a coincidence that Bon means nice/good.

Wasn't Jon also called Johnny B. when Runaway was on the radios?
