incorrect.
how does a single become "single of the week?"
the record company pay for it to be the single of the week.
Radio 2 for example - will get 3 singles from 3 different record companies and make them bid for the title to be the single of the week.
if the record company dont believe the single will sell - they wont push it or even bother bidding for it.
the obviously dont think Bon Jovis new singles are worth the money!

You must have 'inside' information that is not known by the general public then.
I was naive to think that 'singles of the week' were decided by the DJ's/producers and the other songs on the playlists are decided by committee:

i do - as per a previous post on this thread - i used to work for a record company - bon jovis to be exact. i know how these things work.
its the reason an unkown gets to be number 1.
single of the week has no bearing on whether the DJ likes it or not - he could hate it more than any other song but have to say "thats the great new single from bon jovi - its the single of the week" - if the label wins the bid.
its a fix and sucks but thats the way it goes.

Wow, so you are sayng payola is legal? In the US, back when commercial singles were viable, a form of what you describe was happening but it was very hush, hush, since "pay to play" is not legal in the US.

I know in the past record companies 'paid' for singles to be bought by teams of people to help songs get to Number 1, but I didn't know the UK radio industry was basically 'run' by the record companies!

hmmm aren't the sales counted when the actual stores buys them (and not the customer)???

But of course recordcompanies will buy shares and stuff. Isn't or wasn't Virgin a label with a own store, maybe not directly connected but surely it will help in the charts

That's how it works in America, but I don't think it's the case in the UK.

In the US, the gold, platinum status certifications received from RIAA are based on "shipments" to record stores but the Billboard charts are based on actual sales (in our case downloads now) and spins, meaning radio airplay.

So that means every recordstore in the US have a weekly obligation to provide their selling stats to whatver organisation??
That never can be an accurate figure - same for downloads, maybe BJ has a legal download of 50% but 50C 15%

They USED to, which is why there used to be alot of number-fixing, however it's now all digital, and every song has a digital code which is registered each time that song is spun.
*There's a more technical definition in Lonn Friend's "Life On Planet Rock", but that books at my apartment in LI.
