That's one of those songs that would do well in Europe, but tank in the US. I love this country, but musically, we can't tell our ass from our elbows.
Yes. It was only released in Europe and Australia. At the time Bon Jovi did Europe back in 2001 it had been in the top 10 of most countries for some time, and about everybody knew the words, which is why it worked perfect as an opener back then. It's been one of their biggest hits since It's My Life was here and was even bigger than any single released after Everyday.

Salaam Aleikum,
Sebastiaan

I'm pretty confident it would have been laughed at.

Sure it would, but people laughed at Hey God as well.

And didn't that one tank?

Probably their worst video ever too (at least from SWW and onward)...

Whaat? worst video?? I though the Hey God was actually a very good video.
Anyway, it doesn't matter if Hey God would tank or not, its Hey God for god sake.
I can't imagine that song ever been intented to be a big hit - that's one of the single choices they could actually be proud of. Maybe it was done for the fans, maybe it was done to reach that 'harder' audiance, I don't care - if they did that more often we would get the single we wanted.
One of their best single choices

And btw I hope people were only laughing at Hey God because they were too stupid to see that it was written in 3rd person and actually thought that the millionair Jon was asking God if he ever though about him.

Hey God made it to number 13 in the UK. So far for tanking.

Well yes imo that video is a total disaster.

BJ generally sucks when it comes to videos anyway, even in their best period there's always something ridiculous, the little thing too much that is completely tasteless. I can probably count on one hand the ones I find decent/good.

Hey God is a very good song, maybe their last real rocker, but I don't think it was single material.

Yeah but it didn't last very long did it?

How many people in the UK actually know the song, or remember that it's from BJ, aside from BJ fans?

I wouldn't call it a hit, even they've had much worse tankers. And even though I like the song pretty much, it was a bad single choice in my book.

post 2000 i can't see any songs that would have done better in terms of chart success. except with Lost highway where i think the less twang-errific, songs like Any other day, may have been a better option outside of the US.

Exactly that is why it was such a good release. Hey God clearly wasn't single material but they still released, just because it was a good & cool song.
All other crappy singles afterwards, even the ones that weren't single material we released as single material and ment to be big hits.
That's a huge difference IMO

Can't speak for the UK but in Holland just after 9/11 I heard this song 4 or 5 times on the radio. So it is/was still remembered (though only saw the vid dropping by on tv once after).

But again, see above I think it was never intented that way
