still an infringement of mechanical copyright even if you don't use it for a profit.

the sound recording is still owned by someone else wether it's an official release or not.

at the start of my bootleg of the Shepards bush gig Jon says ''blah blah and make sure all you bootleggers out there have a good time'' didnt sound sarcastic either, so im sure the guys are fully aware of it and dont seem to pissed of, well, to a Lars Ulrich vs Napster extent.

he did that at a few shows, so did bruce dickinson of iron maiden. they just mean it to say "looks guys, we know your out there" and its as simple as that. if they were really REALLY pissed about it they're employ some dodgy group of undercover geeks to try and hunt us all out but it isnt going to happen ya know?

of course they dont 'approve' but they could do alot more if they were that botherd

Making a DVD costs too much. They wouldn't sell enough of those to cover the costs. CD's are cheaper and many bands do sell CD's of concerts after the show or on the Internet. But it's not a good business for the band.

Maybe you could buy them through the fan site or something. I would definately pay at least £10 for a high quality copy of the Manchester gig that I went to last year.
Yeah, but would you buy any other DVD's? Probably about 20% of the people that go to a show would buy the DVD. There's no point in doing it, it would be too much hassle. The cameras would have to be changed to get better picture quality, the sound should be recorded with better equipment, someone would have to go through the material and re-mix it and edit it... Too much hassle, it's not gonna happen.

Ice
I don't think the cost of DVDs would put them off too much as they are not that costly anymore, but I know what you're saying about the hassle of remixing the sound, and getting the correct camera angles for each bit of the gig. That would be a lot of hassle. They probably still would make a profit though, especially if they could use a pre-order technique so they know how many DVDs are required. In that case if there are too few they could just not bother creating the DVD for that particular gig, but if many of the fans want a DVD of a show, such as Hyde Park, then it would be well worth doing it.

I don't have a problem getting copied dvd's or software because the only people losin gmoney is the studio themselves.

doing it with music is taking money out of the artist, the performers and everyone involved in the production's pockets, you're talking pennies at a time but a coupla million people across the world = alot of pennies not being rightfully paid to the people.
Film stars can have the choice of earning a percentage of box office takings and DVD sales, so they would be loosing out. Independent computer programmers put a lot more effort into creating their application than any musical artist does making an album. If you were a programmer (but don't get me wrong - I don't think you could be), or an independent film maker, you wouldn't say what you just did.

I digress.

Lars Ulrich incident eventually led into something good, when it comes to Metallica. I mean, how many bands in fact offer all the shows they play for download at soundboard quality & reasonable price? For all I know, 'tallica has always been pro-recording, napster issue was all about official material. And whether u agree or not, Lars was right about that.

And from the leeches' point of view, shutting down napster only opened more and more means of doing it.......
