the market evolves quickly, and BJ ain't the lastest fashion anymore. they have their fan base, but it ain't enough to go platinium in the blink of an eye.
and don't forget that internet is slowing things. everybody can download a record, even before its release. just look at def leppard: X didn't sell properly in uS. if there's no single, you can promote a band. remember EUROPE? the final countdown sold 3 millions copies in the states, with 4 singles. two years after, they released out of this world, and the label didn't put out a single! why? no one knows. and it only sold 1 million in the US.

and remember the buggles, they said : video killed the radio stars, now it would be "internet killed the billboard stars

I don't know if I get your point exactly, but I don't think there's a platinum for "Europe" - it's for each country individually. And the Platinum is not 100 000 for each country in Europe - in Finland, for example, it's 30 000 (because of the population).

Just a note...

I think it's not really a lot. Here in Germany the sale was the same in November (they got platinum for more than 400.000 Bounce-albums sold in the beginning of November here) and Germany is smaller than even most of the single states in America. Compared to the size of the USA and the No. of possible buyers 400.000 it's not really very much for the USA.

I agree with Sambo-Chris. Taking into account that Bon Jovi have sold more than 400,000 copies of Bounce in Germany which has a population of 80 million, 400,000-somewhat copies sold in a country as big as the USA is not very spectacular. All of their albums since (and incl.) Keep The Faith have sold more copies here than in their homeland. Bon Jovi may not be as big anymore in the USA, but here [in Europe] they're as popular as ever.

In Australia, Gold is 35,000 and Platinum is 70,000. That might help a little. Cheers.

The Numbers for Germany are:

double platinum 600,000
platinum 300,000
gold 150,000

for albums. It changed back in 1999, earlier the Numbers were the same as for singles, that are still:

double platinum 1 Mio. (When I'm not totally wrong IML reached this Number)
Platinum 500,000
Gold 250,000

Actually Europe released a singel from out of this world, but it wasn't a hit. I think that "Superstitious" (that was the name of the singel...) was much better than the "Final countdown"... but the Americans didn't like it!!
