I don't think it has to do with Bon Jovi being relevant or not. I myself, initially thought it was a slam dunk for Bon Jovi but if you analyze the situation a little, the Super Bowl location isn't about the hometown bands.

The Super Bowl is nation wide event and not just a hometown game. Historically, in other location, the hometown bands were not the front runners either. I think the Super Bowl halftime show is more about entertainment and they are looking for entertainers.

When Aerosmith did it, Britney Spears came out. Bon Jovi is not as action packed as The Stones or even Bruce. Plus I think the older rock acts didn't receive the ratings that they wanted. They want the youthful entertainers.

Especially now, with Richie in limbo, Bon Jovi are out. The question is, could Jon's voice handle the Star Spangled Banner? Obviously a hypothetical but it could be a possibility. Or maybe a special guest to Bruno? They close the show with a duet of Prayer? I think that could very well happen.

Agree with the above.

Also I think the panel was under fire awhile ago hiring ageing acts, ie kiss etc so it's not a surprise they've gone with someone more in the now, plus Bruno is a hot act at the moment. Like someone said he's racked up so many number one hits. I don't mind the guy at all.

The other thing also, is I'm sure with all Jon's NFL contacts they were at least on the radar, but I can't help suspect this stuff with richie has impacted it. The Super Bowl isn't going to touch anything that's ugly in the media and not when things are still so up in the air, unless they could confirm the whole band was playing for the SB. So I think they've said no, we can't take the risk and probably rightly so no matter who is at fault in the Bon Jovi camp, and lets be honest I think the media war will only get worse, not better.

As soon as the word is out I expect a bullshit excuse from Jon though.

Salaam Aleikum,

That is absolute bullshit. If this shit with Richie wasn't going down, I'd bet money they'd be doing it. In fact, Jon was probably asked regardless but turned it down due to the awkwardness of playing to that large of an audience while still not having addressed the issue.

No way to both questions. I mean seriously. 1) Say what you will about Amurrica, but one thing we have is a pretty cool national anthem. It's also really hard to sing, and it's certainly out of the capabilities of Jon Bon Jovi. Can you imagine him belting out the final lines? It would be a disaster. No way. 2) Why the **** would Bruno Mars, or anyone else that matter, want Bruno Mars to close his show on a cover of prayer? Come on, no one cares enough about Bon Jovi or New Jersey in the middle of the Super Bowl for that. Get real.

I don't think there's any chance in hell Bon Jovi was asked already to do the Super Bowl... and if he was, do you really think Jon would turn out down just because Richie wasn't there? Jon loves football and loves the big stage, he wouldn't give up the chance to play in his home state for the Super Bowl. The NFL probably didn't ask, because Bon Jovi is irrelevant and sucks now. Also, Bon Jovi was heavily involved with the NFL during 2002, playing before the season opener, at Thankgiving, and 'after' the Super Bowl (which was really dumb)... it goes to show how little the NFL trusted giving Bon Jovi the big stage then, I think that was throwing Jon a bone, they're not going to give him another chance.

But man, if Richie leaving the band in disarray was any reason why Bon Jovi didn't get asked to do the Super Bowl, and if Richie wasn't already dead to Jon, he sure as hell would be now.

I could see Jon making some sort of appearance in one way or another. It's not likely he'll sing the national anthem but I do think that he could handle it vocally. Instead of the "bombs bursting in air" it might me the "beeems beeersting in eeer" but besides that, I think Jon could do it.

Another point is Jon's attachment to professional football in general. There has been some talk for a while about a possible co-ownership. He also attends different events with some higher ups in that league too, from training camps to charitable events. I'm sure it has nothing to do with him doing the half time show but you never know with Jon. On one end he might have some pull if he really wanted to do it. Or maybe Jon wants to remain a businessman and non-rock star while he hunts for his team.

Bon Jovi are almost legendary at this point so them being relevant is not a factor. As long as The Stones and Springsteen continue to rock, Bon Jovi will not get to that next level. Guys like Bruce and Jagger are settling the mark and Jon needs to keep going to that mark if he wants to be on that same level one day. Until then, they are just a huge act in the business.

I think Bruno Mars is a great performer. Some of his songs may get annoying (mostly his slow balladsy ones), but he seems to put on a good show.
