Take a mediocre song like Good Guys. What makes that song so good, is the fact that the band rocks it and Jon sings his ass off. He's hitting high notes, his voice sounds youthful, and he's creative. "Hey Baby!

If Jon wrote and sang this song in 2014, it would be the worst song ever.
