springsteen is average as a songwriter. his gift is being a performer.

Bon Jovi on the other hand are great live and have far more great songs than Bruce!

IMO
Meh, I'm not a Springsteen fan either but I can understand why people do like him. In conclusion, music is subjective, blah blah blah....

Thank you Seb - for someone who is not a fan you sure seem to get it.

Bruce is a musician - that what he does and that's all he does. All of his considerable energy only goes into one pot. When Bruce put's on a show he is 100% there - he truly does give his all. He's passionate. If you ever actually read the words to his songs you will find he has written stuff that speaks to a univeral condition like Growin Up (one of his more well known songs). Most anyone can relate no matter what age they are as we have all had had to grow up sooner or later. He doesn't just write stupid lyrics that rhyme such as "Insane, freak train, you don't wanna miss this." That simply doesn't cut it in my book.

He tells stories during his show - he relates to the audience. He changes his stories every night in addition to his setlist. The shows are seldom shorter than 3 hours because he loves what he does - sometimes his band literally drags him off the stage. That enthusiasm is very contagious.

Does Jon have a better voice than the boss? I think he used to but not anymore. Bruce still has a range that Jon only wishes he could have these days. Jon certainly has a "cleaner" voice but that then is simply a matter of taste I guess. Bruce still rocks hard - screams his head off rocking some nights - and he's a hell of a lot older than Jon too.

However in the end - some of it may be down to subjectivity. But as I said above - if you listen to his music and read the words along with it - it is head and shoulders above most of what is out there. It is serious music.

Or as Bruce himself recently said - "It's only rock and roll but it feels a lot like love".

That made me LOL. So true.

I love it - might get that made into a car bumper sticker..

If I never hear another "roll of the dice" it won't be too soon.
It is Bon Jovis' live performances (and that is when Jon is in a good mood) that really makes them a successful touring band.

Most of the crowd don't even realise when Jon is in a bad mood and as long as LOAP and IML is played most are happy. It's the die hards that can pick Jons mood right from the start and know what to expect at most shows.

Very wise of you to make this thread when I was away for the night.

I'll be back later tonight, and I'll make sure that during today I'll learn some new abusive swearwords to type at you.

But just before I go...

Springsteen makes it damn well obvious he loves playing for the love of playing, and not for the love of money.

Whereas Jon Con ****in' Jovi needed to act on the sideline because music became such a chore for him. Well, that's the impression I got anyway.
