Here's the transcript of Carson's interview with Jon. Got it off a mailing list. Thanks so much for posting the info on the show, Becky!
C: He acts, he sings, and i find him incredibly handsome. Please say hi to Jon Bon Jovi!
C: You could really ditch the whole music thing and run for governor of Jersey, no problem
J: (laughs) it's not a bad idea
C:you're so awesome to be here tonight
J: thank yoU! i'm happy to be here man!
C:YOu have so many fans here in the room, i have to just start with our own intern on the show, NOel. this girl is in the back. We've had to cage her and her friend Joel for fear that they would inflict bodily harm on you during this interview
C: i have some stuff here how you're such a huge fan. What is in this bag here that you gave me? It looks like a crime scene?
Joel: That is from the first time we got an autograph from Jon, and I put it in a plastic bag so nobody could get their finger prints on it
C: This is the sharpie he actually used
J: I thought this was a Monica Lewinsky moment (haha)
C: There is a stained napkin in here too haha. ANd what's this photo album? This is a whole album of..they're just near misses (all pictures are concert photos of the crowd in the way)
J: (LAUGHING)For twenty years, i see these flashbulbs going off...i'd be up there singing, and every night flashbulbs going off, and i just keep thinking "This is exactly what they're goign to look like! sorry folks, the camera don't work!!! (looking at album and laughing) Absolutely nothing! she's got the back of everyones head, that's great"
C: (invites the girls down later to take a photo with Jon)
C: you're still married to your highschool sweetheart
(crowd goes 'awww', jon looks shy)
J: yes i am
C: hey girls, do you know the name of Jon's wife?
(everyone shouts out DOROTHEA)ooh everybody knows (laughter) I thought the point of being a rockstar was to get women..
J: well, i'm on the list for J LO, but i'm # 8 or 9 (laughter) so ill wait my turn..it'll come soon
C: where was Ben?
J: i think he's 3 or 4..i'm like 9..it's coming, so i'll get my turn eventually...um, i just (girl shouts something from audience, jon turns, laughs, and blows a kiss)...i think i got the girl thing right the first time and you don't mess with that, so yea, u know (everyone says AWWW) and he says "oh please"
C: not to mention that she's got a black belt, doesnt she?
J: yeaaah..
C: that's gotta help...let's just do this once, where's the old picture of Jon..
J: o god (flinching)
C: just once (shows picture of jon in superman shirt in 80s)
J: (Jon looks EMBARASSED! pretends to get up and leave )"it was really nice being here carson nice to see ya..." (turns back and sits down)
C: Just once. Just a lot of hair going on.
J: On a day off i come here, no less, and i ..he blows out the 80s picture.
C: Jon, there's been a lot of bands, that have been, not a lot of bands actually, that have been around as long as you have, obviously everyone has ups and downs, is there one simple way, besides the chemistry as your fans we know you have, that have enable you guys to not only last but still just be so good today?
J: truthfully, staying the course, if we had tried to appeal to what was fashionable in 83 when we came out, it would have been Culture Club and Cindy Lauper, and by 95, we would have had to pretend to be from Seattle and get the grunge thing down, and then by 2000 i would have needed to learn how to dance, and i don't know how to do that (laughs)J: you know, so the fads and fashions come and go and what we learned early on when we were trying to desifer who we were was to stay true, and just go back to Jersey and dont leave what we know, some people will like it and some people arent, but atleast if you come to one of the shows and hear the record, it's honest. I'm not going to put a rapper on because it's fashionable.
C: Tell me a little bit about 1992, its an interesting year, it was the beginning of the seattle grunge scene, keep the faith came out in 92 it was number 5 on the billboard, specifically speaking to that and whas going on in music, how did you as a band be able to survive that, when so many other bands failed?
J: it wasn't a conscious effort, but what happened at the time is that we went through a very interesting period with sww and nj to either impote as a band or go on to find out who we were going to be in the future, in the next decade, um i just happened to turn 30, cut my hair, it wasn't a conscious effort, but it was just like i feel like a different man now; i wrote blaze of glory, and when the band finds itself a new, you want to say something, the riots happening in LA, you find a social conscience, you write ktf, the wall has been down now, and it is clearly going to be a new germany, & you address social issues. I found that Kurt Cobain was just the shot of adrenaline that the music business needed bc it was really becoming rather mundane at the time and i thought it was great thing to have kurt come in and rattle the tree, and the strong were going to survive, really.
C: How hard is it not to alter your music?
J: there is no way bc you look at it and its just not who you are, and you can play the seattle looking at the shoes kinda mentality, but we were the biggest band in the world, and had sww, blaze of glory, and nj all #1 and we were playing every stadium (applause) im not gonna say i hate this (grunge)i dreamt of having led zeppelin written on the side of a 27-27 when i was a kid, and so i wanted to be an aerosmith & led zeppelin, those huge, larger than life kind of rock bands, and to change bc the tiems were changing, it wasnt the right thing. we had to say something more, be something more, and do it on our own terms.
C: What is your opinion of newer younger bands today like a limpbiskit,or a linkin park, or kid rock?
J: Kid is incredibly diverse, he's a very smart guy, he cfame to detroit and we hung out forhours afterwards, and my kids listen to kimp biskit or linkin park more than they do...bon jovi records...and so i like that too, i find the energy of that fantastic, i love it! when i listen to the goo's every night or matchbox i enjoy that stuff, jon mayer is perhaps a new dave matthews, i find great excitement
C: when do you just stop, get fat, and follow the giants around? do those things that you do?
J: after i'm governor of new jersey (laughs0
C: is it when u stop making hit songs? is it like what michael jordan said "when i'm on that court, i just don't feel it anymore"
J: well that would be very important, iw ould walk away before we werepulling away the history of it, the legacy, ill quit before then, but richie and i were in teh car the other night, leaving the gig on the way to the airport, and we're both in the car (snorting, grunting), you know teh snots are still falling sitting there w/ a couple of towels,
J: ...and i say "****, i wonder what it soudns like with jagger and richards in the car (laughter) and richie says "they ahve snot older than we are" you look at them as a gage, bc god knows that i would be humbled to carry their luggage any day of the week, when they cool it, then we know where teh benchmark is/
C: alright, cool, would you mind taking a picture with the girls?
C: is that a new outfit you got today ,ktoo?
Noel: yes it is
C: how much did that sucker cost?
Noel: not too bad
(they come down, shake hands and say hi to jon, )
Noel: nice to meet you!(to jon)
J: alright, come over here! (turns back to camera) now shouldnt i be standing this way so that (laughter)
(takes pic, jon looks at it, then takes another)
then
BON JOVI
plays the DISTANCE
