CD:UK – Saturday 7th September 2002
Cat Deeley (CD), the interviewer, does an intro – Jon (J) and Richie (R) mess around in the background
CD You trying to put me off?
J I didn’t hear a word you said
R What did you say??
CD We’ve got Bon Jovi in the studio (Cheers)
CD You did that on purpose – you encouraged them
J We did no such thing
R I certainly did!!!
CD You’re the naughty one
R Yeah – I’m the naughty one
CD Listen, you got off the plane literally – how many hours ago?
J Just a couple – we just got in from New York because we’ve
been doing a massive gig in Times Square
CD How many people?
J Half a million
CD How was it?
J Pretty outstanding
R Unbelievable. The mayor of New York shut down, like, 17
blocks
(SHOW CLIP OF TS)
CD What are you doing here in the UK?
J We’re here to see you. Here to be on CD:UK
CD Really?
J No.
CD And to these guys here maybe (points to audience)?
CD Now your new Cd’s coming out.
J Yes
CD What’s it called?
J Bounce. Is this a quiz?
CD Yes you’re doing very well at the moment – I’m scoring you!
There are a lot of new rock bands. The likes of Sum41, Blink
182, Alien Ant Farm.
J & R And Bon Jovi 45!!! We were right on that one.
CD Do you still feel confident putting singles out?
J Yeah. We just do what we do
R We do what we do.
CD Is it good to have a bit of competition there?
J There is no competition there. (Crowd – oooooooooooooooo!.
Richie waves his hands in the air).
J At our age, we don’t care.
R We just do what we do and have our own stylistic thing
CD What new bands do you like?
J I was digging that new Feeder song just then. I thought that
was pretty good. There’s a lot of great things out there.
There’s a real resurgence of Rock and Roll at the moment too.
There’s a lot of great stuff. There really is.
CD The difference with you guys is that you’ve been doing it for –
what – 20 years?
R Shhhhhhhhhhh.
CD I’ll whisper it.
And yet you still fill stadiums.
R That’s what it takes to fill stadiums!!
CD Do you think these new bands will still be filling stadiums in
years time?
J Sure they will. 20 years ago who’d of thought that we’d still be
doing it? Yo’ve just got to stick around and do it – just keep
doing what you do.
CD But do you think they will?
J Depending on who they are – the good ones stick around, the
ones they sign that are pretending to be like that fall away. It’s
just the A&R guys’ job#
R You’ve gotta have good songs, songs that people can relate to.
That’s what comes down to it.
CD We’ve got some questions from the viewers – they’ve been
texting in.
(Richie mocks shock)
R You’re kidding me - I’ve got to think now!
CD One viewer asks: You’ve been in the business 20 years. How
do you manage to keep looking so good?
J Make up darling!
R Paint, sandpaper, putty
CD Another viewer asks: Jon you’ve been in Ally AcBeal 0 would
you like to be in any British TV shows. Eastenders perhaps?
(Jon laughs)
J I’m on CD:UK – What else can I do? It doesn’t get any better
than this!
CD This is the pinnacle of your career!!!!
I know you’re playing a big gig tonight in London so Good luck. BON JOVI (cheers/clapping)!!
J & R Thanks.
