It sounds more like a put down to me. Bands playing indoors are very geeky, like Bon Jovi.
no.

he's saying that outdoors you need loads of lighting, screens etc to get the show across to the people, which is very geeky and technical.

The way I read it he's saying they can't really do big outdoor shows, the small indoor ones are geeky, so it's hardly insulting Bon Jovi

Aloha !

Coldplay just can't play shows outdoor because none of them sell out.

Yes, I agree with the technical aspect but it's the word "geeky" that sounds negative. Computer nerds are stereotypically depicted as geeky. Anybody can hire someone to do the technical stuff while knowing nothing about it personally, thus disqualifying them for geeky status.

only because they play crappy outdoors venues that people avoid like the plague.

I don't dig Coldplay at all. They aren't a rock band and they aren't a great band. I think they're overated big time and there is no comparison between them and BJ. Chris Martin is a geek who thinks hes got a great voice when really he's boring. The only song I vaguely like is Clocks for the killer keyboard riff, but the positives end there.

How do you know that he 'thinks' he's got a great voice? Maybe he is fully aware of the limitations of his voice and hence, he only writes songs that accomodate his voice - ie. slow, moody songs.

I don't care if he is a geek or if he seems boring. I even forgive him for being married to Gwyneth Paltrow and named his daughter Apple. His music moves me, that's all there is to it

well, he actually IS a big star - whether you like it or see it just has no relevance.

I think it was a backhanded compliment. Coldplays tour this year has been a massive success though and after seeing them at live 8 I can tell you that they have no problem in holding a big crowd
