From a 1992 interview I did with Jason Newsted:

"...I moved to Arizona and started Flotsam and Jetsam...about at the same time that Metallica got started...Then...(bassist) Cliff (Burton) got killed, and they asked me to join...
"It was (an) easy (decision) in the sense that my favorite band in the world was asking me to join them, but the difficult part was that Flotsam was my baby...it was kind of a drag to lose that control and power. The rest of the band was very upset -- their leader was leaving them behind...But...they admitted they would have done the same thing...We're still friends..."

Which left Flotsam and Jetsam with a tough decision of their own: either wallow in their misfortune and betrayal and break up -- or
get another bassist and get on with their lives!
