Well this is true, I don't think you even need to go as far as a word or chord tho... pretty sure that if you were asleep and in the room you still get credit out of some weird convention... whether anyone actually stands by this when it gets serious I don't know... wonder if anyone dead has managed a credit to date?

It's up to the band who gets a credit and who doesn't. It's up to what they report to the officials.

Kurt Cobain and Frank Zappa for example. Many people get credits after they're dead, people just use parts of their songs or unreleased stuff.

sorry, should have clarified if it wasn’t clear from the context… I wonder if anyone who was actually a corpse in a room when a song was written received writing credits.

Talking about tradition rather than law, contracts and payment.
