Absolutely. To me the whole album is soaked with moodiness. I also probably prefer it to any band album, but the contrast standing up next to them does make it shine. It was an honest artistic endeavor and it showed.
The only thing that shocked me about it was the change in vocal style following These Days. Lyrically, it was consistent with the caliber Jon was putting out at the time. For Jon to come up with Crush after DA and These Days was shocking. I got over the vocal style change long ago when I truly got the point of his approach on DA. I actually listen to DA far more than Blaze (an album I loved more than the band albums) due to the lack of the in-your-face vocals. The subtleness displayed maturity.
I would say I'd love to see Dave and Jon work together again. At the same time....I want to see Jon continue to break any mold as he did with DA rather than try to recreate it. If he does a does a solo album now, I'd expect it to be more akin to Blaze following in the wake of Lost Highway. I'm not sure that will go over too well unless he convinces me he's avoiding "crafting" and going for the art with whatever he does.
Finally...Janie should have been replaced with Talk to Jesus. It was only there to appease those who weren't going to adapt too well to the change in style.
