They probably wouldn't use that word "cheesy", but they know it's simple, easy to relate to rock'n'roll lyrics. Wether some lyrics are cheesy and/or stupid is a matter of taste. I don't think they'd put the songs on the album if they thought the lyrics were bad.
I'd love to ask them what the hell they were thinking when writing some songs though...

If he knows he probably doesn't care, he still managed to sell Mr Big Time.

They have a target audience, that they wish as large as possible, but I think they are very well aware that some people hate their work and find them ridiculous. Should they care? Maybe when it starts to come from die hard fans...

I don't think that's always been the case, but it's what I feel from their latest work. Songs like AALY are Bon Jovi products, not songs.
Their really inspired work brought up three sorts of successful songs: optimistic rock'n'roll, cowboy songs and power ballads. It's the receipe they've been overusing since Crush (with some sort of modern touch) after darker directions had been tried with less success. The point is obviously to appeal to their (wrongly?) targetted audience.
