It sold well because it was a good and well-balanced song.

I like harmony, balance and completeness. As I said whatever he did his guitar work was fitting and didn't make the song unbalanced.

We can argue about this untill the end of time but it's pointless. You look for one things in guitar work and players, I look for different things.

i'm talking about the album, not the song. the song on it's own i can handle. the rest of the solos are montonous.

I was talking about the song. BoG (single song) made this record what it was.

In all honesty overall the record is not good. (ANd how it can be good if it consisted of like 10 songs written for one terrible and character-narrow movie!) His guitar playing was fitting to the quality of the record I guess. But, yes overall it could have been better.

Blaze of Glory was the only song Jeff Beck played on. The rest of the guitar work was covered by Aldo Nova. I wouldn't say the solo on BoG is bad by any means. It's by no means Jeff's best, not by a long long long way, but it's got a few of the old Beck tricks in there!!

True guitar players can overcook something, but I don't think what this is about.

The guitar solo fits, it's pretty good, but pretty good isn't what you expect from possibly the best guitarist in the world (or at least top 5 on anybody list).

It's not a case of the guitars not being great because it isn't fast, listen to the guitar break on High Ho Silver Lining... simple but ****in outrageous! I think he could have done a much better job... But then I woudln't blame Jon at that stage, you'd have to have pretty big balls to tell Jeff Beck his guitar solo wasn't good enouh and for him to do it again, and at the time I dont' think Jon was big enough to do that.

As for Bon Jovi trying too hard I think they're trying too hard to be part of the music scene nowerdays. Instead of following their own musical direction they're trying to get hit singles and retain their status as a 'pop' band, drawing in new fans e.t.c. Unfortunatly in my opinon it's trying to hard to be popular, big, and make money... Not trying to hard to deliver the goods and make good music. I saw Jon twice on the last tour and I don't care what anybody says, he just wans't interested in the gig at all. I've seen him when I'd say he's on form, giving it his all, but last time was just going through the motions. It's almost for me like Jon wants to still be the big rock star, but his heart and soul isn't there anymore. The magic has gone for me, and that rings true for the recent albums as well. The effort is there, it's just being put in all the wrong places.

I must disagree with you here.

I am not a big fan of BoG but Jon proves on this record he is a great songwriting. In terms of songwriting it's just brilliant.
And it's total versatility makes it great too. You have country influenced rock, traditional latino music influenced rock, piano-driven ballads, hard rock songs and even folk. The film might be very narrow-minded but the songs on BoG don't necessary speak about the film but about 2 legendary characters namely BILLY THE KID and PAT GARRET.

And don't anyone tell me that BoG hasn't got amazing lyrics. They just kick ass.

Jeff Beck...I couldn't explain it to me either...since it's JEFF BECK.And the guitars on BOG are just OK.
But I guess Jon and Jeff and Elton talked about what this album should be and Jeff has probably understood it's JON who HAS to shine on this record, not him. That's my opinion.

the fact is, a bit of sub-standard slide playing with no direction doesn't constitute a decent contribution to an album.
UH! "sub-standard slide playing"? I thought it was fooking ace! and original. I'd like to see Richie having a go with a slide (now that's an idea), I mean properly, not no TLFR or Crush shite. Even the simple bit he did on Gimme something for the pain sounded shite live. I reckon it's goddam hard to play slide.
