True guitar players can overcook something, but I don't think what this is about.
The guitar solo fits, it's pretty good, but pretty good isn't what you expect from possibly the best guitarist in the world (or at least top 5 on anybody list).
It's not a case of the guitars not being great because it isn't fast, listen to the guitar break on High Ho Silver Lining... simple but ****in outrageous! I think he could have done a much better job... But then I woudln't blame Jon at that stage, you'd have to have pretty big balls to tell Jeff Beck his guitar solo wasn't good enouh and for him to do it again, and at the time I dont' think Jon was big enough to do that.
As for Bon Jovi trying too hard I think they're trying too hard to be part of the music scene nowerdays. Instead of following their own musical direction they're trying to get hit singles and retain their status as a 'pop' band, drawing in new fans e.t.c. Unfortunatly in my opinon it's trying to hard to be popular, big, and make money... Not trying to hard to deliver the goods and make good music. I saw Jon twice on the last tour and I don't care what anybody says, he just wans't interested in the gig at all. I've seen him when I'd say he's on form, giving it his all, but last time was just going through the motions. It's almost for me like Jon wants to still be the big rock star, but his heart and soul isn't there anymore. The magic has gone for me, and that rings true for the recent albums as well. The effort is there, it's just being put in all the wrong places.
