Big and Rich did the best job performance wise, and were the most engaging of the openers. Gretchen Wilson has an amazing voice, the country girl can nail Barracuda, not the easiest thing to do , but performance wise nothing.

Daughtry, with his eyes closed Scott Stapp posing and his forced and faked minimal attempt at talking to the crowd was nauseating and BORING.

The all american Rejects frontman has the gift of gab but needs to stop being afraid to put down his guitar and step out in front of his mike and perform
.

My point is, as annoying as some of you find some of Jons banter, watch a performer that doesn't have his skills then watch him, it makes you realize how much he adds to a show and how good he really is at what he does.
I actually think Jon is one the best best at it I've seen.
The bolded statement confuses me a bit though.
Do you think Tyson shouldn't play bass live to be more of a frontman, ala' Billie Joe Armstrong?

Yeah I do think he needs to put down his guitar, at least part of the time. He has charisma, he engages well but i got the sense that that guitar was a safety net for him. There are songs that need a frontman to sell them, so to speak.

The best example I can think of is Story of my life. To casual BJ fans this isn't a well known song yet it played very well live in NJ. Why??? because Jon made a production about the song, playing around with Richie, inviting and acknowledging the crowds part in writing the story, making it come to life.

Tyson is talented, but every band needs a frontman to sometimes draw focus, to bring it all together. there is nothing wrong with him playing sometimes, Jon does it but there are songs and moments where he needs to step out from the band and command attention.

But Jon plays second (or third) rythm guitar, BJ songs don't all need them (specially now since Bobby's there). Tyson plays bass, not exactly a 2 songs per show instrument.
Though I haven't seen them live so I don't know if they have some readie playing bass for him on some songs...

I'm not a fan of the ass shaking. I'm usually so full of energy at Jovi shows anyways, it doesn't really effect me much. I'd much rather he didn't do it though.

I do realize he plays bass, but live, you can hire a bass player. At some point, Tyson needs to decide if he's the frontman of this band or the bass player. Every successful band I've ever seen had/has a dynamic out in front at least some of the time frontman. All I'm saying is that Tyson showed some good charisma, a pretty good gift of gab with an audience, but seemed afraid to step out from behind his mike stand and his guitar and really be a showman.

I see what you mean, but the musician fan in me would rather have him play the bass. But, if he did put it down and just be a front man, I wouldn't have a problem with it.

I take it you've never heard of Metallica then or Rush. I also saw Trivium the other night where the lead singer plays guitar and they were awesome live. Maybe the guy enjoys being a musician and is prepared to sacrifice a little success along the way to do so. Not everyone is obsessed with chasing record sales like Bon Jovi. Not that I'm defending AAR too much here as they are total corporate whores aswell and their music sucks.
