Not from the band's side, but from the organizers. There had been riots and the band had to do two gigs on one day or so and then they didn't want to let them out of the stadium.
It is covered pretty good on the AAA video.

Yeah same here. A town that is exausted and no longer has the resources to run. There's no jobs, money or anything to trade with and the people live in poverty without being able to escape. They're praying for the break that will keep them alive. That's how I interpretate it.

Well written songs are good, because they allow you to use your imagination to interpretate them how you want.
I can kinda see Aberdeen going that way once the oil's run out in like 30 years. A lot of the companies and industries rely on the oil industry here.
The companies and industries in every city, all over the world are like that. All rely on fossil fuels as the main source of fuel, or to generate energy/electricity. I don't know what life will be like in 20 or more years but some kind of alternative will have to be found, unless of course somebody finds a whole lot more oil.

I heard recently on the news that the government wants us to use 20% renewable source energy by 2020 and I just though it was ridiculous. I know that nothing changes overnight but it won't be long before we'll need 100% renewable energy, even if it does mean large wind farms "ruining" the views across our countrysides and solar cells everywhere.

yes they can. That is what an interpretation is by definition. Apply your views and experiences to the subject matter at hand.
Yes true, unless the song is utter meaningless, for example Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin. My take on it is that the girl in the song is trying to buy a passage to heaven, but I read an interview with Robert Plant and he said he had no idea what the song was about due to being stoned for the whole writing/recording process.

In another interview I read, but by Mark Knopfler he said that he doesn't like to explain the exact reason behind his songs because he likes them to be interpretated by the listeners. He mentioned that's why a lot of books are often better than films, because you can use your imagination to interpretate things how you want.

Just because he was stoned, doesn't mean the song is meaningless. He might not be able to recall what exactly motivated him or what he had in mind when he wrote it, but I am sure that he had something in mind. Even if he doesn't remember. Or, even if it was more of a subconscious expression. Your take on the song is still completely accurate - as is any and all interpretations. They are all right, because they are applied by individuals based on their individual experiences and histories. Nobody is to say they are right or wrong. The only thing that can be said is that it is a) not what the writer had in mind (touche), b) not how the majority of listeners would interpret a certain piece, or c) the conclusions are inconsistent with the subject matter and as such don't make sense.

To me the song is about shallow people and lost souls, people who have no focus and no true emotions. People who have external needs to compensate the lack of their own spirit.

Kurt Cobain used to say that his lyrics have no meaning. I don't buy it for a minute. I grant him that maybe sometimes he didn't know how to express exactly what he was trying to say, but I believe that at the very least subconsciously he did have certain things in mind. Generally, in Cobains case, I just think he didn't want to talk about it and claimed it was scribble to avoid the whole issue

Chris Cornell said that he used to write lyrics and then go back and distort them enough to make it impossible to read his true motivations/meanings behind the songs as he didn't feel comfortable with the public to know his most intimate thoughts. He also said that he has since learned that it is 'ok' to be more open and straightforward in his writing. Acknowledging that Andrew Wood was extremely good in 'just writing' and that AW had no hesitation to blurr out what he meant.
