Where have you been man?

Yes it has kinda been hashed over - the people responsible for the audio in the Bon Jovi camp don't care. And they are some of the worst offenders as you can see by your chart.

I have a quote from Obie - let me go find it. I copied it from the official site a few years ago:

Ha ha... I never saw that! I use to chat with that guy... a really nice, smart guy! ...maybe a little too blunt with someone who is use to having his ass kissed, but nonetheless right!

That's why I went back and bought the original un-remastered CD's of the first 4 albums and glad I held back on buying the KtF and TD remasters. Even more glad BoG and SitT didn't get the "remastered" treatment.

Apparently the vinyl edition of Greatest Hits (as with most vinyl albums old and new) doesn't suffer from a lot of compression but I don't have a state-of-the-art turntable equipment nor do I really want to dig out the best part of £100 to find out for sure.

What about the Bounce Super Audio CD's? Can anyone out there confirm if the mastering (compression/dynamics) are any better than the regular CD?

Well actually SACDs work on an entirely different principle so this whole point would be moot - rather than using a fixed number of bits (CD redbook standard is 16-bit) it uses 1-bit to describe a movement either up or down. So rather than compressing everything into a maximum range, you just sample it differently (2.8MHz instead of 44.1KHz). I have a few SACDs and they do sound fantastic. It just annoys me that people want for higher and higher quality TV, but they want their music compressed to fυck just so that they can fit 100,000 songs in their pockets.

It would surprise me to see anything else. Everything has to sound the same across the board now so what you get on radio has to be exactly what the single and the album sound like... blame the people who wanted lower sized files with "the same quality" and the radio-pop of the late 90s early 00s... Theoretically it could all change now, since you don't have the same quality loss problem with digital signals as you do with analogue but something tells me o-t-t compression on top 40 albums is probably here to stay.

I always thought so but many people really like him. I dislike how he handles the sound (and sometimes the way he handles himself) so I have never been disposed to think he is a good guy.

waaah, we're dissing obie now? ok that was a bit sharp tongued, especially since if he didn't like a question he usually didn't answer it, but he was usually quite witty. And despite how awful it really was that little presentation thing in the munich stream was at least good natured and mildly humourous. I have no real reason to dislike him as far as I know.
