That is only true if you subscribe to the stereotype of girls liking BJ because of their looks and don't pay attention to the music - hence they like the nice little poppy love songs. Guys on the other hand don't care about fluff and rather hear some good guitar work.

While I understand the roots of that sterotype and often have to remind myself that it is just that - a stereotype, it's ridiculous to think a song is a guy or girls song.

I have the strong opinion that the term "guy song" should be limited to stuff like Misunderstood, where lyrically it's very obvious who they should appeal to, and not stuck on songs just because they have an epic guitar solo and harder edge.
HOld it. You think Misunderstood is a guy song???? Based on the lyrics, I suppose?

Female and loving DC here.

Thank you Maria Gender based music is the stupidest thing I ever heard of. Why make music that only appeals to half the population? People that write good music want it to be universal. Jon has commented that he didn't start Have a Nice Day with "Hey Mr President" because he wanted it to be univeral. Otherwise people that identified with the President might not like the song. It was a wise decision I think. Do you really think he wrote Dry County only to appeal to males? He told a story that touched everyone with that song. And before people start bashing me for saying "he" and not "they" The story that I heard was that Jon wrote that song after his motorclycle trip cross country. I'm sure Richie worked on the guitar solo.

Needlessly stating that I'm female and it is my favorite song from this band.

I'm female and Dry County is my favourite Bon Jovi song - it really is a masterpiece! I disagree that it is a "guy" song - I think its all of the individual band members at their best on their respective instruments, and the story it tells is so emotionally evocative, you can't help but be moved by it. The lyrics really take you into the speakers world, and you feel his pain - its Jon at his songwriting best! It still blows my mind that a guy that came up with such a powerful, incredible song also penned the likes of Misunderstood!

The lyrics come from a male perspective and seem to be very male orientated eg.'I packed up on my wife and kid and left them both back home' or 'a man spends his whole life waiting, praying for some big reward. It seems sometimes that payoff leaves you feeling like a dirty whore.'

This is specific to the male disposition and his struggle to make ends meet, so to that end, its a guy song ....but most of the ballads are from a male perspective aswell - The difference is that a song like Dry County deals specifically with traditionally masculine issues such as money, working, supporting your family, doing what a guys gotta do, wheras the ballads are all about love, feelings, romance and roses - traditionally female concerns.

Whether this affects your opinion of a song is down to how traditional a guy or gal you are....I'm an alpha male. Thats why I love Dry County and hate You Had me from Hello.

Richie's solo is mamoth, I just wish he'd do a few more of them to show-off what a fine guitarist he really is ... Slash does so.

You had me from Hello makes me want to gag - does that make me an alpha male too? And in my world - woman have to worry about money, and working and supporting their families also, so I don't see those as male only concerns. Just on this board I can think of several women who work, support themselves and worry about money.
