Was Jon singing it live on GMTV? My flatmate reckons that the entire performance was done to a backing track, I thought that it was just the instruments being mimed and the vocals were live. Although now I'm not so sure...

Yep, vocals were live. Listen to the start of the chorus, "we weren't Bo-uh-orn" to follow... he doesn't hold the tone properly.
