what do they mean with this sentence? i don't get it.
If Richie's CD is comes out around the same time as the box set, then "Bon Jovi" would be over-represented when it comes to having a product out. It's a conflict of interest of sorts because Richie's audience is overwhelmingly derived from Bon Jovi's audience. I know it seems like it should not be that way because Richie Sambora is a separate entity who has a completely different voice. He doesn't sound like Bon Jovi, but because he really hasn't established himself as a solo artist separate from the Bon Jovi audience, it amounts to having two Bon Jovi products out at the same time which will potentially distract sales from one or the other. That's one reason the live CD did not come out in 1991 as planned. Jon had just released Blaze in 1990 and Miracle in 1991 and Richie released SITT, One Light Burning, and Ballad of Youth in 1991/1992. They would have released a single from a live CD and instead of Bon Jovi going away for a while, it would have been Bon Jovi overkill on radio and in stores.

Universal is not going to compete for sales to a single target audience so only one would be likely to be pushed for promotion. And what would that amount to? Bon Jovi gets pushed because they have a much larger audience than Richie Sambora and, once again, Richie's solo work doesn't get the attention it should to establish him as an artist in his own right.

Becky

Thx!

Thanks Becky. I thought it just meant that the record company knows that Richie's CD isn't going to sell a great deal, therefore their bargaining power is reduced because the company is letting Richie complete a project which, in the long run, won't earn the record company a great deal of money.

This part makes me doubt if the article is for real. Someone posted once on Backstage that she talked to Obie about the boxset and he said that he was searching the Net which confirmed him that he found songs for the box set that no one really has heard earlier. A lot of outtakes from NJ and SWW are known. So somehow this doesn't fit with what Obie said.
Maybe Obie didn't search right
Or maybe they have outtakes which are really unknown by the fans. We have lots of outtakes, but no one knows if there is more. Only the band knows.

I hope the article is true as it sounds like the old BJ and I really hope they're coming back with good rock songs. I guess it's again a matter of patience!

Those of you who are basing your satisfaction on the boxset being comprised of tunes you've never heard before..just because "Obie said so" are going to be disappointed.

I'm sorry people..but just because you downloaded or have a bootleg CD of unreleased tunes does not mean the Box Set should not have these songs. YOU should not have these songs. A Box Set releasing songs you may have heard via unauthorized release is officially releasing the song for the first time.

Also...I'm not all that keen on them trying so hard to make sure songs are chosen that NO one has ever heard, not even in bootleg form, if they are songs we didn't need to hear.

The way to look at is if the Box Set contains songs like Cadillac Man, Love Hurts, Lonely At the Top....they have done their job. Unless the songs have been released previously such as on CD singles...they have never been released. You got it on bootleg and heard it already? That's your problem. The Box Set will release these types of songs without any degradation in quality....if there is live video such as stuff from the New Jersey tour that you have on bootleg....same thing...you have no right to be complaining as you shouldn't have that already.

Additionally..if you think this box set is going to be entirely rare or unreleased songs.....you don't know box sets. They are career retrospectives. You better start setting your expectations within reality cuz we don't need to hear the baseless whining start when reality hits the shelves.

I Searched the link he posted and came up with nothing. Has anyone else had any better luck?

Bleeding Purist, fundamental you are right and if Obie hadn't said that he was searching (and I'm very sure he was here, too, since DC is a very well known page) I would say the same as you did. But he did search and said that he found songs no one heard. Obie knows very well about the songs that are avaiable on bootlegs. He is not dumb.

That's because I'm nicer than you are. Just kidding!!! Actually, you have a point that I didn't even think of. Well, in the end, they'll probably go with the solid product. They know Bon Jovi will sell, so I'm sure if it comes down to an either/or thing, it will be Bon Jovi with a single.
