Are you serious????

"If I don't believe in heroin, how can I believe in dope?"

And rhyming with pope?!!!!!!!!!!

Awful, awful cheese.

It is the amazing balls that Jon shows in delivering these lyrics with so much sincerity that attracts me to the band.

This type of lyric really is top of the list of reasons why BJ are not taken seriously by critics!

All I can say is Oh God can you imagine if that song was about you??

One thing about many Bon Jovi songs is they express feelings in a really beautiful, deep, poetic manner. Whether that emotion is love, loss, regret, belief I have always been in awe of many of their lyrics. They are the masters when it comes to lyrics.

I LOVE THAT SONG!!!

Some of the best lyrics are Dry County, Something to Believe In, Living in Sin, Mystery Train (the words are so poetic), Postcards from the Wasteland, You Can Sleep While I Dream, Only in My Dreams, Satellite, Last Man Standing, and Bed of Roses.

I think it's in how you see it. I hear "if I don't believe in heroin, how can I believe in dope" to be a line about desensitization in general. If you don't support the larger "sin" (heroin) how can you support the "smaller" one (dope)? I hear "If I don't believe in Jesus, how can I believe the pope?" to be asking if you don't believe in Jesus, how can you believe his supposed messenger here on earth? If you don't know for youself what Jesus says (therefore what you say you believe in) you better not take any MAN's word for it because the pope is just a man and as fallible as the next guy.

But what I think is, when Bon Jovi write good lyrics (and they've written a few apart from These Days) they write the best. And when they don't... well then, you know.
Couldn't agree more, that verse just breaks my heart.

Mmmm goddamn. I love it.

Big chunks of "My Guitar Lies Bleeding".

And from "In These Arms" "You know I need you/like a poet needs the pain" and the whole "Your clothes are still scattered all over this room..." part.

Something To Believe In - truly amazing! And sooo beautiful and deep.
Another Reason To Believe - Listen to it and read the lyrics and think about 9/11 you'll understand why it's amazing too.
Dry County - simply great! Storytelling at its best!
These Open Arms - I like it, espacially the first verse
I Am - the verses are great, but the chorus...:/

I agree Something To Believe In lyrics are ok but those two lines ruin it. If I don't believe in Jesus, how can I believe the pope? Is not that bad a line but to rhyme it with the heroin, dope line sounds so forced and contrived just to get a rhyme. Not a huge fan of lyrics in These Days, I love the song but I always feel myself slightly cringe when he says Jimmy Shoes.

Hey God is great lyrically as is Dry County, Someday I'll Be Saturday Night was quite a clever little idea aswell. I know it's absolute cheese but I still love the lyrics to Wanted. The bit after the solo "I walk the streets etc" is just legendary. Prayer also has underrated lyrics.

I Believe - One of their best lyrically in my opinion.
Hey God - Probably the best lyrics of any of their "serious story-telling" songs.
Last Man Standing - Most heart-felt lyrics Jon has written in over a decade.
All I Want Is Everything - One of their best songs that somehow didn't make the US version of These Days.

For me personally, these are my favourite lyrics:

"I've been walking in the footsteps of society's lies. I don't like what I see no more. Sometimes I wish that I was blind. Sometimes I wait forever to stand out in the rain, so no one sees me crying trying to wash away this pain".

I listened to Hey God and I actually have to agree, those storytelling lyrics are great!
All I Want Is Everything is really great too - I had forgotten these two songs.
