Just because there are solo's in every song doesn't mean it becomes a joke, every solo is obviously going to be different. So I would guess your friend hates bands like AC/DC, Van Halen etc...****ing insane.

Look in their eyes Mom you'll see me."

Exactly. Solo's will only be boring if they last the same amount of time/are of exactly the same style etc.

Solo's are out of fashion.

A slightly sad but true fact.

They'll come back sooner or later.

I was at a gig last night seeing Teenage Fanclub.

The support band were very good. Bon Jovi-esque rock band with good melodies, great choruses, a charismatic front man but you know what really put me off them... the guitar solos.

The guy could really play but it was so formulaic verse, chorus, verse, chorus, extended solo, chorus, chorus.

Every tune pretty much ran this structure and by the 3rd one you realised that the solos were there just to be there they weren't actually adding anything or making the song better.

On the other hand teenage fanclub don't have solos in every song and they certainly aren't shredders when they do solo but they fit the tunes perfectly and really add to them instead of just being assinine showing off.

Richie and Bon Jovi have realised this and I'm pretty glad they have to be honest.

Remember that it's 4 of them.. Hugh doesn't exist yet :/

The lack of solo's ain't the only problem, the lack of guitar arrangements, take bed of roses for example. The guitar work there is insane, it's a lot more than just chords.

Also, Solo's bore most "I love jon" kind of female fans. They belong in a rock song.. It's like any other part of a song, your friend obviously don't appreciate them. Maybe choruses bother him too.

It's just laziness, why would I waste time making a kick ass solo if I could sell the same or more without it?

There's no problem with formulaic if songs are good and different.

Actually if you have a problem with formulaic songwriting, then what are you doing here? :/

I mean, it's what BJ is all about

There's solos on everything on these days and it's not formulaic.

Stuff like SWW IS formulaic and I get the impression that this is the type of soloing people want to see come back.

Actually it IS formulaic as you described previously..

People want good songs back, with good solos and everything else. Not something in particular.

I like the most post 2000 stuff too and I quite like the fact that there isn't a blazing solo on every tune.

And this is coming from a guitarist that idolises Richie...

I prefer solo's with meaning behind it, y'know, the ones where Richie is really feeling it and transferring all emotion into it. I prefer those solos from every guitarist (hence why I love David Gilmour so frickin' much).

If there's no emotion or wanting behind it and then dammit I'd rather have no solo.

When you get an unfelt solo you get an It's My Life solo
