Oh definitely, they looked great then, but it would look bad now, for any band.

I didnt think The Darkness wanted to be taken seriously at all, not as seriously as, take BJ for example. I thought they were a complete joke, and they knew their second album, if not first, was. He was always naked and male/female genitals was the subject of many a song. Growing on me, Knockers, Dont Let the Bells End etc

Grunge was an antithesis to hair metal just like punk was antithesis to prog rock and the boring British scene of the mid-70s. Every once in a while people just get bored of the music they've heard too much and they hop on board to something completely different. There's nothing special about grunge killing hair bands, every music style is in fashion for a few years and then they go to the background and are cult favourites. And good bands always survive short-lasting fashion movements. And, if you like big rock songs with lots of hooks and choruses, that kind of music didn't start with 80s glam metal and it didn't end when glam metal disappeared from mainstream; there's always been catchy chorus-rock for those people who enjoy that stuff.

Exactly - a perfect description. Just because it's fun doesn't mean it is all fluff and easily dismissible. Making people feel good is also a worthwhile cause.

I feel the same about reading and literature too. Until I was in my thirties I always felt that I had to read "important" and socially serious stuff. Somewhere along the line I got a clue, and I now simply read what I like - for my own pleasure - the same way I listen to music.

There's two different ways to look at it. You could say music that speaks of hardships is depressing, and doesn't uplift people. Or you could say people who are going through it/have gone through it can relate, and can connect and it helps them. Both can be true.

Kurt was brilliant for that. He speaks to people that get it. Many, many people are thankful to him for it. Just like hair bands can uplift people, Grunge (or any other music that is...on the more negative side) can help people. Kurt himself said something along the lines of "the people we want to get it, gets it"

Also, none of Nirvana's lyrics to me are "gibberish" A lot of them are just abstract...there's a difference. They also have some beautiful lyrics. Not to mention Kurt's voice is, IMO, amazing. It gives me goosebumps... it bleeds emotion!

It's not even a thing of hair bands vs Grunge for me. I just like what I bloomin' like.

He never wanted to do this. He just wanted to play the music that he liked. All this people that started to relate to him was something he didn't enjoy at all. He didn't want to speak to the people, but all of a sudden there were these people that did think he was talking to them.

They're not abstract and Kurt hated the fact that some of his fans started to think that he wrote deep or abstract lyrics while all he did was just put words down that rhimed.

Those aren't lyrics, they're just insulting.

No, really, those were actually lyrics from an actual song? That's all the more reason for me to hate grunge more than I already do!

Honestly, with all the losers at school that complain about how stupid hair metal is and how freaking awesome grunge is, and that Nirvana is one of the best bands EVAR...you'd think that there was something a bit more...classy? to it XD With all I've heard from the grunge bands and now all the lovely tidbits I see from this discussion...what's so great? I also find it interesting that though Nirvana's music managed to help people, it couldn't help Cobain himself at the end. What does that say about what he was thinking when he wrote the stuff?

IMO, the age of hair metal was the last brilliant era of rock music...lots of melody, very creative, very memorable....everything after is just OKAY at best...God, can't believe there was an age where grunge and rap were mainstream at the same freaking time. The horror o.o
