It's just a bit different in Bon Jovi, because they were always so good at not airing their dirty laundry in public. Richie's substance abuse can't be the main reason as Jon always stood by his side during his earlier battles.
And if Richie ever comes back, I'm sure Phil will bounce. He's probably too busy and too expensive for a secondary role like this and, unlike Nils, he's just not a fan of Bon Jovi, musically, that's always been pretty obvious.
It's ironic, because I actually think that Shanks would be a really good fit next to Richie, because Richie would be the guitar hero we all know and love, would sing all he backing vocals you need and the only thing missing would be a guy who plays the rhythm parts properly without ****ing up and needing the spotlight. Phil, in that spot would be underutilized.

You know what? We will never know the underlying reasons but it was probably a whole bunch of things that came together. I think Richie's substance abuse might have been a major influence. Sure Jon was by his side but still it is hard to bear and because of Richie's unstable behaviour I am sure the band wasn't able to count on him for the full 100%. His playing got sloppy, his singing got worse so all in all, it might have been that Jon gave Richie an ultimatum to sober up, get fit, get back his focus or to step away from it.
On Richie's side, he might have felt serious pressure in combination with some sort of a burnout. Then something like his daughter becoming 18 and maybe asking for more time with her dad might have pushed him over the edge to step back and deciding for himself to focus on what makes him really happy.
His public behaviour, musical choices and performances are weird to me, but if he feels more happy than with the band, his choice was the right one.
On Jon's side - he probably hadn't wished for this breakup to come, but on the other hand I am convinced that Jon really wants to stay in the A league of music and would not want his band to become 2nd class band due to having a guitar player who's not up to par.
Quality wise, the band is now stronger with Shanks and X.
Jon himself also knows that he can't deliver himself all he once was capabel of so reinforcing the band was surely a move that was thought through.
For us, sure their sound became more generic but from a pure quality point of view Shanks and surely X are solid musicians
