Exactly: "assume"....no one knows for sure. I've heard many different stories from people in the business that contradicts everything we've heard, but I'd get shot down here for repeating them. I have no doubt that Richie's dependency on Alcohol and/or drugs played a part BUT there IS a lot more to the story.
