According to a person who worked for BBC at the time (and actually engineered the Milton Keynes '89 audio himself), the multitracks are recycled after recording, and if rebroadcasting wasn't planned at the time, then the master is destroyed after the initial broadcast as well.

That was common practice, also a long time with regards to TV shows (especially game shows which were not deemed worthy a rebroadcast). There's entire articles on Wikipedia about shows almost completely lost due to that recycling technique.

I spoke with Obie a few years back. He has it and is completely aware that fans want it.

I dont pretend to be negative here but Obie has always said to the fans what they want to hear.
I have spoken to him several times through the years and he has said to me many things and nothing has ever happened.
I got to a point where I dont believe any thing he said to fans while on tour.
