Has anyone actually listened to the album?! There are two 9 minute, 5 part songs on it, and this from a band who rarely records a song longer than 4 minutes! How can that be nothing new? That's more 9 minute+ songs on one album than Bon Jovi have recorded their entire career!

Green Day were'nt as big as they are now until this album. ermmmm, why? Let me think, O yea, they started to appeal to 13 yo girls.

i remember listening to some green day stuff back in school along with offspring and some other happy punk wannabes but luckily that's over and done with. it's not that i liked these bands i just enjoyed some of their songs. i was into metal (and bon jovi ).
for my standards all bon jovi albums even crush and bounce are way better than green day and their kind of music. there's no similarity between the two albums (hand and american idiot).

Least punk thing I've ever seen, it was just appalling.
Please, no punk-discussion. I've seen those a million times, and they always end up the same.

And, as somebody already mentioned them, The Offspring, often called GD's rivals, are definitely the better band.

Actually I find green Days attitude nowadays to be kind of refreshing for a band of their genre. They are not all that concerned to be considered punk as they were after dookie was a hit. And American Idiot is perhaps the most intelligent record released in a while, and perhaps the most intelligent and well rounded in it's genre.

Bon Jovi always do what they do and they do it well.

Both bands sold out a loong time ago.

Yeah, I have listened to it, all of it several times. Sorry just don't hear anything grand about it. There are a few tracks I like but overall it's just a good record, not the brilliant masterpiece the critics seem to think it is, at least for me. Now I'll say the same thing about Springsteens Devils and Dust it's a good record but not a briiiant album to me . I like it, I own it but it's not amazing to me, it's just really good Bruce.

I think that a lot of people fail to grasp that it's a concept album.
It's been a while since one of those has been both relevant and good.

To those of you who think American Idiot just isn't all up to hype... Walrus brings up a thousand good points and on top of that... The album has had number 1 hit after number 1 hit. There are 2 nine minute mini epics on it. I mean, that's pretty impressive. They are all over the place right now. How about they play Jesus of Suburbia every single night on tour?? They sometimes even play the other nine minute epic along with it. Because of AI, they are selling out arenas everywhere. There are so many points I can relate to Green Day and American Idiot being up to hype and successful that it's not even funny. Some of you need to sit down and listen to it, take it in because it's one hell of a ride and for some of us, a record that'll be one of our favorites for years to come.

Sure, American idiot is poppy. But unlike some other poppy shit discussed in this board, GD is catchy and well put together stuff, instead of living their live in every****ingsong.

So true. A good example of this was Jet. They were accused of selling out with their first album (?!), not to mention the fact that some of the songs on that album they wrote when they were all of 16 years old!

Yeah, that mentality is definitely out there- if it's popular on radio, it's evil.

That, of course, is pure bullshit.
