Not to derail the thread or make it about Big & Rich, but I agree that they're underated and the fact that they don't give a rip about whether their music fits a certain niche or not plays against them. But it's also one of the reasons I like them so much. That, and the way they can do such clever word-play with totally serious stuff like "Raisin' Hell and Amazing Grace" then turn right around and do the same thing with something as irreverent as "Save a Horse". And seem to have so much fun while they do all of it. Boggles my mind!

On a side note, one of my favorite stories about them and Bon Jovi is about the naming of their album, Hillbilly Jedi. I don't know if it's been posted here before but here's the quote from the Billboard article:

Quote:
John Rich says Jon Bon Jovi deserves credit for pushing the title of the new Big & Rich album, "Hillbilly Jedi" -- and for getting the duo permission to use it. Rich tells Billboard that the title idea came up during a songwriting session he and "Big" Kenny Alphin did with Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora for "Hillbilly Jedi's" opening track, "Born Again." "I don't remember who actually said 'Hillbilly Jedi' first, but I remember Jon Bon saying, 'Well, if I ever saw a couple of hillbilly Jedis, it'd be you two knuckleheads.' And we all kind of went 'Ha, ha, ha,' what a crazy line.' And then the title just kind of stuck."

But Big & Rich found The Force might not be with them when they proposed the idea to their label, Warner Bros. Nashville. "They said, 'Oh, we're gonna have to run this by our legal department... because the word Jedi is owned by George Lucas (LucasFilms)'," Rich recalls. "We went, 'Oh crap, we didn't even think of that. So sure enough, legal says, 'No, they can't use that.' " Bon Jovi, however came to the quick rescue.

"Kenny called Jon and told him, and Jon said, 'Hang on a second. I'm gonna call George.' And Kenny says 'George who?' and Jon says, 'George Lucas, dude.' So he picks up his cell and calls George Lucas... at a race car event in Morocco and says 'Hey man, my buddies Big & Rich want to call their record 'Hillbilly Jedis' and the legal department is telling them they can't. Would you do a favor and just be cool about it and let 'em call it that?' " Lucas agreed, but with one caveat. "He said, 'I have no problem if they want to use the word, but it's not Jedis. There's no 's' in Jedi, ever. Jedi is singular and plural, like deer,' " Rich recalls. "And we're like, 'Fine.' Sure enough, the next day we got paper from New York saying 'You guys can use it.' "

JBJ: Hang on... I'm gonna call George.
Kenny: George who?

I liked this when it came out but don't really listen to it now. Make a Memory is probably my favourite from it.

I rank it very highly. As someone else stated, it's the last time it felt like a real band making music together. The production is great, too. It sounds organic, not over-produced. The vocals sound clean and are just brilliant (for 2007). Probably the last great vocals from Jon on a record. And it's got the last great ballad with 'Til We Ain't Strangers Anymore on it.

Forgive me, but I love all those cheesy ballads. The Last Night is one of my favorite songs ever, because of the melody, the lyrics, everything. Could do without Make A Memory, Summertime or Lost Highway though...

Spot on.

Each song alone isn't bad (except the title track...to me one of the worst tracks in their catalogue). Actually there are really good ones, some nice lyrics, some nice melodies. But as an album it failed to connect, I miss the flow.
It's an album I really need to have the right mood to listen to it.

Lost Highway has a bitter taste in my mouth as it really has taken to much spots in the set list since its release, but if I try to look beyond that it's a very good release. Probably the post-2000 album with the most honest and real lyrics and none of the political crap. This really was the last album before the band really wandered into the political see-what's-going-on-in-the-world crap lyrics they've been doing since The Circle (of course they had some of these on Boune and HAND as well).

Make a Memory really gets me every time, probably the best post-2000 ballad. The video is one of my all time favorite Bon Jovi videos. WLOL is lyrically great, Any Other Day another highlight. Till We Ain't Strangers has a great chorus, but some of the lyrics are almost a little too cheesy in my book. Maybe I will look at it differently if I get married one day. Always enjoyed One Step Closer, even though I get why it's quite forgettable for some people.
Real shame that Lonely was so similar in its sound to Memory. It's a truly beautiful song tha doesn't feel forced at all and would have made the album even better. The same goes for Walk Like a Man, The pre-chorus part "I couldn't believe it..." is one of my favorite Lost Highway-moments.

For me, Lost Highway is one of the stronger post 2000 records. I always enjoyed the band most when Jon strapped on an acoustic and there was plenty of that here. Walk Like A Man is one of the best songs they have ever done and I can't get my head around why this wasn't on the album, hell it should have been the first single!

There is some filler, but Whole Lot Of Leavin, Any Other Day, We Got It Goin On, Lost Highway, etc are all great songs...

TWASA is way too cheesy for me "make love to me baby" is horrible.
Should be "take me from behind" to make it better.

MAM is the best ballad since Always. Nothing else comes close.

The second half of the album just fizzles out for me and all the songs blur into one long bore-fest.

An undervalued classic which marked their shortly lives renaissance both in studio and as a live act.

Overall my 3rd favorite Bon Jovi album behind TD and NJ. KTF and SWW both have some amazing songs (which LH doesn't), but it edges them out based on consistency.

I love this album. My favourite post-2000 album, and my 5th favourite overall. It has aged well, for the most part.

Whole Lot of Leavin' is an absolute gem. I rank it as my third favourite Jovi song of all time, behind Prayer and In These Arms.

We Got It Going On has one of the best riffs on a Jovi song in that bass line. The song itself might be cheesy, but the music is a blast.

Make a Memory is blissful, and Any Other Day is a solid track. The Last Night is lyrically beautiful and the three bonus tracks could've all been on the proper album.

Summertime and Lost Highway are enjoyable enough, and I think Strangers is highly underrated.

I liked Seat Next to You when the album first came out, but it's gotten a little old for me now. One Step Closer isn't a strong track, but it has grown on me through the years.

Everybody's Broken is probably my least favourite track on the album. And while I don't think I Love This Town is a great track, I think it's still enjoyable when I'm in the mood (I really like the bridge build up to the last chorus).

Overall, it's probably the one album that took me longest to warm up to, but I'm glad it did. I think it was well worth the risk for the band.

What helps the album I think is the production. It's clean and the instruments are allowed to breathe, similar to 'These Days'.
