No, not really. It's Paul McCartney himself who brings the entire band together and then rehearses for 2 weeks before going on tour, including stuff like Band On The Run and Let It Be, unlike Bon Jovi who think they can play Livin' On A Prayer by now.

They do need to rehearse, but way too far gone to change the habit now

The thing is, they did rehearse some stuff before doing the Have A Nice Day tour. These Days for example was rehearsed at soundchecks few times before the band played it live and the result was that it sounded better than it did on the Bounce Tour.

That said, I don't think the band or Jon realizes that Livin' On A Prayer and many other songs are played much slower than they were. I don't think he notices the difference, and therefore they're not being rehearsed. It'd be nice if someone would shove him a recording of 1995 down his throat, but the chances of that happening are a bit small, I think.

Sebastiaan

Not true - just look at the following. Tempo is pretty much identical and one version of Prayer is from this tour and the other is from Live in London:

Sydney 2008:

London 1995:

However, the two versions differ massively in vocal performance and general energy but there are almost 13 years between the two gigs!

Are you for real? Jon and the band have been in the music game for well over twenty years now, but you think they (All well respected, professional musicians) don't notice what tempo or speed the songs are played at?

Not only have you been proven wrong by RS8MB0R8 but you've also shown yourself up to be a Presumptuous fool.

Yes. If Jon would really notice, he would've changed the pace of Who Says You Can't Go Home. Or It's My Life. Or In These Arms. Or Bad Medicine. Or Undivided. All those songs are often played too slow. Just a small example:

Undivided CD UK 2002

Undivided on tour in 2003

Also, it happens to many other artists who perform the same song over 20 years. Somebody from Bryan Adams sounds shit nowadays, exactly for the same reasons. Livin' On The Edge of Aerosmith is also the same story.

Not really. Livin' On A Prayer was the wrong example, since that one has been played slower every tour, even in 1995. Still, the 1995 performance sounds filled with energy, while performances of the song in 2006 only sound that good because of the crowd. Not because of the performance itself.

Salaam Aleikum,
Sebastiaan

I think that this is the major difference. The energy songs are performed with makes a song feel faster than it actually is. Given the lack of showmanship in comparison to earlier shows, I do think some of Jovi's live material has a tendency to feel laboured and drawn out nowadays.

It's likely they've been using the same backing track for prayer for years now anyway so its gonna be the same tempo till the end of time, unless the WOAH is triggered by midi controllers ie Dave or something...

Yeah, Undivided was one that was so obvious on the Bounce tour. Played a lot slower IMO. That surely is to make the song easier to sing though isn't it??

Bounce was played a lot slower and it stood out massively.

It's My Life is played at the same tempo most likely due to the sampled backing vocals:

IML video:

IML live 2005:

----------------------------------

Bad Medicine - also the same tempo:

BM 1990:

BM circa 2002-2005:

---------------------------------------

Can't be bothered to check the others but for 'In These Arms' I would hazard a guess at the reason it feeling a bit flat is because Jon doesn't sing the high notes anymore and it's also tuned a step and a half down from the original now.

Kinda suggests that Tico is one of only a few drummers on the planet who can hit the right tempo EVERY time or that he's playing to a click.
