He's playing with a click on every track they use samples on. Like LOAP, IML etc. He used to play a lot faster live, but he can't do that anymore.

I find it funny that so many use Prayer in London '95 as the end all be all of the song live. Listen to it in 1987. It's raw. It's powerful. Jon's vocals are amazing. Listen to the chrous. It actually sounds the way it's supposed to sound. Not the best quality (and only audio) but compare this to now and it's almost a travesty.

Are you sure, I think samples are triggered by Dave who follows whatever tempo Tico is playing.

Tico used to hit harder, but play faster? Maybe on a few drug fueled 80's shows !

Anyone who has the HAND live ep they released (i think through Target stores? I got mine on ebay), what about Raise your hands where Tico is COMPLETELY out of time on the hihats at the start of the song? I can't believe that one made it onto an official release!

Aloha !

There are a few bootlegs coming from in ear monitors on which the click can be heard.

I think Tico definitely plays certain songs slower than he used to, whether that is to make songs easier to sing for Jon or simply because hes gotten older, I really dont know. To me, the change is most noticable during songs like Lay Your Hands On Me, In These Arms, Bad Medicine and sometimes Born To Be My Baby. Just my personal impression though.

The thing is, the song has to be at a set tempo for the keyboard pads/samples to work - if Tico's playing faster/slower and the samples are of a set duration, the samples cannot change with the live chords as they'll be out of sync due to the difference in tempo.

It's the same if they use a backing track except backing tracks are less forgiving as at least with samples, Dave has a certain amount of control as to when the sample is activated. Provided the tempo is right, the samples will work. With backing tracks the tempo AND the start of the song have to be spot on otherwise it'll fall apart.

EDIT:

I don't see it as such. I merely used the London show as an example as it is the easiest mid-90s show to get hold of and the best quality. Supersonic referred to the mid-90s renditions, hence I chose that one but the fact is you can choose any - the tempo of Prayer is still the same as it ever was.

Just found a funny mistake, Richie somehow misses the solo on wanted. Jon stops the band and asks Richie to play it again!

The samples are set in tempo. You can only use samples if the tempo of the song is the same as in the sample. So, regardless of them using samples or backing tracks, there's still a click track fro Tico.

Yep, he did both. He used to really pound the drums. Just look at any bootleg from the 80's to early 90's. He was a machine.

Yeah I can't believe Jon released that recording either, being the perfectionist that he is.
