I think Jon leaves all the live stuff to Obie.

I haven't heard that rendition of RYH but, if it's as bad as that, it begs the question as to how much time they actually put into deciding what goes out for release. Do they even check it first?

yep it seems that Obie has a lot of control over the jovi mixes, I personally think their live mixes (at least the ones properly recorded to be sold as official material) suck big time. Drums don't even sound as powerful as they used to, and its not cuz tico doesnt hit as hard or play as hard, its because of how its being presented in the mix (compare how bob rock made that signature heavy snare sound in the records to how obie mixes it). The synths can be much more meatier, wetter sounding too.

if bad name was mixed to sound like the powerhouse of the song it was in the 80's, then it wouldn't sound so weak and boring these days. (just listen to the cincinnatti 87 version, and don't say Jon's vocals ain't good as it was back then because that has nothing to do with the way the mix is done)

The boys can be playing their hearts out everynight, but if it's not presented well on the mixtapes, or the audio isn't tweaked right, all that hard work won't come out in the audio sound.

what keeps my still listening to any of the material live (whether from the 1985 tour, 87, the 2000 live crush dvd, or that HAND live target promo disc) is not because of the quality of the mixes, but because they write good songs and no matter how they are presented in the mix, they still are good songs and even in the year 2028, they will still sound like kick ass good songs. You can drive a $100,000 luxury car covered in shit, but it's still a $100,000 car (that just needs to be cleaned

I ain't no professional sound engineer, but I know what my ear likes, and its clearly obvious that their current live official recordings sound too dry and weak, but are still listenable because it's Bon Jovi performing em'

I don't mean to sound too negative

*and another note on how when they use samples, that tico can't play slower, it's possible that upon aquiring the samples, background vocal wavs, and other effects that they trigger causing tico to play with a click to keep in sync.....actually jon can decide overall what tempo he'd like to play, can tweak those pre-recorded samples from the studio to be sped up or slowed down to his liking, and then set the click to the tempo to the pace he wants tico to play. that way everything can be played exactly at the speed that they want to play regardless of the tempo and pitch that the sounds they are triggering are since they can be modified and edited.

I'm really not sure they do; listen to the drums/samples on SOmething To Believe In on One Wild Night Live and see how that's messed up too - basically Tico gets out of time with the sample and it "subtly" fades out! Really can't believe that made it onto their first official live album!

I have the bootleg DVD from Yokohama, Richie plays an extended solo in the outro of something to believe in, On One wild night live it's cut! exact same performance but Obie or the band decided to edit a "live" song!

Theres also an intro from Richie on wanted which has clearly been recorded in the studio.

They cut Prayer on the OWN album too remember and edited the talkbox - they spend ages p*ssing around with some songs and end up making them worse and then they seemingly don't listen to others and release bad performances... it's laughable really but we all buy that sh*t anyway!

"Something to believe in" is not the only song they edited for the live album. It's more like there are nearly NO songs that are NOT edited. The only songs that are not edited are "Bad Name", "Wanted" and "It's My Life", maybe "KTF", if I'm correct. Even the running time of "I Don't Like Mondays" is shorter than on the These Days-Bonus Cd (though I don't know where they've cut, maybe only applause in the breaks).

On the other songs it's quite obvious. The worst cut is in the end of "Bad Medicine" - it's easy to compare as it's the version on the Crush Tour DVD. In LOAP a whole chorus is missing, on "Runaway" the best 10 seconds in the end part are missing (the fast part with the high guitar notes and the snare drum, which they play every time and it's even herad on the bootleg of this show). On "Something for the pain" the main riff in the beginning is cut down, and even "Rockin' In The free World" has a shorter intro then the B-Side that it was in 1996, same goes for "In & Out Of LOve". And I'm quite sure that "Saturday Night" is shorter in the end than it has been played.

I think why they did this enourmous edits is that the album had been planned as a double-CD, which the shitty record company didn't allow, and they then wanted to put as much a spossible onto that single disc. Still, with over a minute of runnig time left, some of that edits are just annoying...

I don't think that Richie's intro to "Wanted" was recorded in the studio. They don't like cheating - compare when they decided not to overdub their Yokohama unplugged performance from 2003 and instead made TLFR. The way he plays the intro i sthe way he played it many times on the Crush tour: A short guitar intro, then Jon introducing the song. They days when Richie takes 3 minutes before the song are long gone...
