Judge denies furlough for Bon Jovi sound engineer

WEST CHESTER - A Chester County judge yesterday may have taken some
of the spring out of Bon Jovi's Bounce World Tour by denying a
furlough to the band's ace sound engineer.

The band said it needed William "Obie" O'Brien, 52, of Nottingham,
for a "groundbreaking and quite complicated" broadcast of a Bounce
gig in San Jose, Calif., to air on QVC.

One problem: O'Brien is completing a prison sentence for having sex
with a 15-year-old girl. "Having Obie in charge of the sound quality
of a program that will be seen by more than five million viewers live
on television is essential to the success of the band and the
evening's program," wrote Ilene Schreibman, a Bon Jovi spokeswoman.

After listening to attorneys on both sides and the victim's mother,
Chester County Court Judge Juan R. Sanchez, who sentenced O'Brien in
August 2001 to 18 to 59 months in jail, issued a ruling without
comment.

What sort of paper is the Philadelphia Inquirer ??

as far as the Tico comment - she's still legal

rock stars often get attractive younger models

but not 15 year old slappers

Actually, it's not made up. It's true. The Bon Jovi camp just managed to keep it a secret until now, for obvious reasons. But now the cat is out of the bag and the media is having a field day with it...

As far as the actual case goes, even though Obie probably DIDN'T know the girl was only 15, he still should've known better. Considering that he's a married man and all. I know that with the current fashion, much thanks to the Spice Girls, Britney, Christina and the like, I can't tell a 14-year-old girl from an 18-year-old girl cause many of them dress like some friggin' porn stars, regardless of the age. So it's no wonder that a 52-year-old guy gets fooled... But that still doesn't make it right for anyone of that age to sleep with a teenager. He should've known better and not taken such a risk.

Looks like times they are a-changing even for roadies -- back in the old days they could just pick up the best groupies and get a bit of extra nookie without having to worry about anything else than birth control & disease control... But now they have to make sure that whoever they pick up isn't going to sue them for date rape or statutory rape afterwards.

And about the ages, I think that in Finland the age of consent is 16 in normal cases and 18 when the teenager in question is legally incompetent or somehow handicapped or when there is for example a student-teacher relationship between the teenager and the adult.

i know it's closer to my age anyway

but i can tell the difference between a 15 year old and an 18/19

maybe when you're getting onto 17 it's a little harder

Well obviously Obie didn't get a jail sentence, because he's been answering questions on Bon Jovis' website, and been seen at concerts.
As for the charge, it's certainly changed my opinion of him. Let's be honest, Obie is no oil painting, so what would a 15 year old see in him, except maybe the chance to get near the band?! He's supposed to be Jon's best mate, so i wonder if it's changed their relationship?

Didn't he say not too long ago at the Info HQ that he WAS married? I know from other sources that he's been married a few times already... But whether he was married around the time of the "incident" or whether he's still married, that I don't know. I was just going by his answer at the Info HQ some time ago.
