Default Hey God lyrics.

Is the song, which delves deep into the emotions that accompany despair and a feeling of abandonment, taken from the bands point of view or are the lyrics actually based on the thoughts of the character in the song? Just wondering......

Jon and Dorothea were watching the news and Dorothea commented on people living their lives two paychecks from the street and her comment struck Jon enough to start developing the idea. It's based on people who aren't as blessed and how they may question God and how someone who is so blessed can wonder how they got in their position. Jon has said he knows that HE could be the one on the street instead had life turned in a different direction.

Thanks for that Becky! It's a great song - and one that was genuinely inspired by something REAL as opposed to things they've seen in movies...

having said that i think he's still overplaying the Sayreville poor kid thing a little too much (especially from what i've heard about his childhood - let alone the fact his uncle worked with bands such as the rolling stones)...

that a poor child does not make

I don't think he's overplaying anything. The fact is ANY of us could be in a different situation with just a little twist of fate. I'm not broke and hungry, but what if my dad had lost his business when I was little and I hadn't been able to go to a good school and get a scholarship or afford college? What if you lost everything in a fire and didn't have any insurance for recovery? What if a tornado or flood destroyed your home and killed you family? What if you made a stupid decision to get try heroin at a party when you wer 16, got hooked, and ruined your life? I don't think he was saying, "Poor me," but realizing "That could have been me." And BTW, my rich uncle never gave us money and my cousin is a producer but that doesn't mean I get to hang with celebrities.

Which was the point of inspiration for the song. Things could be different for any of us given a single turn of events.
