I thought the beggar on the streets inspired Richie to write Harlen Rain, that was kinda born out of Hey God.

here we go, the truth :

Hey God

"A moment of coming to my senses. I walk through 57th street in Manhattan and carelessly step over a guy that's laying on the side-walk. Just like that, as if it's the most normal thing in the world. But why do we do that? Why do I do that? And why is it not me laying there? Anyhow, a song that makes you think."
(Jon)

"I'm not going to candy coat anything anymore. A song like 'Hey God' questions things rather than just saying 'This sucks'. I will question authority and question myself, or the situation, to try and get the best it rather than condemning it."
(Jon)

"I was riding in a limousine one winter day. We pulled up at a light and there was this homeless man on the pavement. We had eye contact. It was a serious moment. I felt very guilty. He was sitting in this cardboard box and I was in the back of a limousine. I thought, what the **** can this guy be thinking of me? I thought in his head he had to be writing a letter to God. God, what the **** happened to me?"
(Richie)

I don't think he's overplaying anything. The fact is ANY of us could be in a different situation with just a little twist of fate. I'm not broke and hungry, but what if my dad had lost his business when I was little and I hadn't been able to go to a good school and get a scholarship or afford college? What if you lost everything in a fire and didn't have any insurance for recovery? What if a tornado or flood destroyed your home and killed you family? What if you made a stupid decision to get try heroin at a party when you wer 16, got hooked, and ruined your life? I don't think he was saying, "Poor me," but realizing "That could have been me." And BTW, my rich uncle never gave us money and my cousin is a producer but that doesn't mean I get to hang with celebrities.
This is the way it goes in the States. Social security is a wonderful thing to have. You don't think that before you can really appreciate it for saving your a'ss.

Thank God I didn't born in America! :P :P

Newsflash: Dorothea stole the phrase "two paychecks from living on the street" from an episode of the Golden Girls. LOL I saw that episode yesterday and couldn't help but think of the song.

So by that they're saying that it's the homeless guy's thoughts being portrayed in this song.....thanks for this though, very interesting!
