I'm still trying to figure out why someone would say that Slash sucks, and also say that C.C. Deville is a great guitarist.... I'm truely fascinated.

Anyone ever heard of John Petrucci? An amazing guitarist, for the band "Dream Theater". Was he in the top 100?

Seriously though, listen to the guitar solo in "The Glass Prison" by Dream Theater.
Richie diserved top 100; but he deserved better than 80.

Seems it is easy to truEly fascinate you. I don't think you have ever heard any Poison bootleg. Or any CC instrumentals, any of his tapping, now have you? Slash would break his fingers. Just because GnR is a better band than Poison, doesn't mean Slash is a better guitarist than CC or than Ritchie Kotzen. Slash is just a cool dude to look at. That's very important. But it was Axl who wrote the solo for November Rain, it was Izzy who wrote most of the riffs and just because you once came up with something as brillant as the riff for Sweet Child O' Mine doesn't mean that you belong in the top 10.

CC Deville is a master. Unfortunately he is not a great guy to have in a band since he overemphasizes his technical abilities and tries to gain too much attention. This can harm the overall sound of a band, still this doesn't mean he is not a ****in great guitar player.

Yeah Petrucci is a phenomenal player, I'm more a fan of his melodic stuff than The Glass Prison though. I love the Lines In The Sand solo and The Spirit Carries On. The solo on the Budokan live album for Hollow Years is just spellbinding.

I disagree with anyone who says Slash sucks, he is an incredible guitar player with real feeling. The solo's in Estranged are magical as is his solo in Knockin On Heavens Door. I agree he's not the best song writer in the world and his solo's and riffs since leaving GNR have not been inspired, I'd say there are about 3 decent solos on the VR album. This does not mean he isn't a great player though.

I may get crucified for this but I've never been a fan of Jimmy Page, I just don't see what the fuss is about. I much prefer Hendrix, Ritchie Blackmore Iommi and even Brian May from that era. Their stuff still holds up and sounds incredible today. Blackmore is one of the greatest of all time but never seems to come close to topping these lists.

Can't comment on CC as apart from Unskinny Bop and Every Rose Has It's Thorn I'm not too familiar with his stuff. Richie should be far higher than 83 though, a brilliant player.

People like Vai and Satriani and EVH will always be in there and rightly so but when DevilsSon mentioned the top 5 who are the best and everyone knows it, he forgot to mention David Gilmour. For me he is the greatest and technically Blackmore could play the ass off any of the others

Slash is an awesome player and I think he was superb on Contraband especially, You Got No Right, Dirty Little Thing, Spectacle, Loving The Alien, Sucker Train Blue's, Do It For The Kids, Slither, Fall To Pieces and Big Machine all awesome guitar playing and the solo's are just amazing in most of the songs. If you directly compared Slash's solo's on Contrband to Richie's on HAND they leave his pretty much in the dust. Like Richie more overall and like people have said his playing on HAND is more to do with complimenting the songs but still the solo's and even rythmn playing are far from his best work. If you still don't think Slash is good after that his playing on any of the GNR Use Your Illusion albums and Appetite For Destruction is brilliant.

Onto Jimmy Page now, I only have the Led Zeppelin IV album (with Stairway, Levee Breaks etc) and some songs with David Coverdale I honestly don't think he comes anywhere near the hype and I mean by that was the way people talked about him especially the fans of Zeppelin and every great guitarist seems to have mentioned him as an influence. I only have a small portion of his work but that was the best album I was told to get and bar some cool rhythm playing and a few solo's I don't see how he matches up to the likes of Sambora, Slash, Knopfler, Collen etc.

Those guitarist lists are a load of crap anyway I never take much notice of them, The Rolling Stone magazine's list was ridiculous.

Those lists are always gonna get deemed ridculous by a lot of people because at the end of the day it all comes down to personal opinion. I know that people are supposed to vote for "the greatest guitarist ever", but you'll find that many people, expecially those who know little about music, will just simply vote for their favourate guitarist instead. For example Jovi fans may vote Sambora, Rolling Stones fans may vote Richards, etc. I wouldn't say I know nothing about music, in fact far from it, but I would probably vote for Mark Knopfler. Is he the greatest guitarist ever? Well in my opinion he has such a distinctive style and gets a really pure sound from his guitar, expecially to say he never uses a pick. Not only could he play almost anything but if you look at a lot of compositions then there aren't many to equal him. So from what I've heard yes.

Now, before you all bite my head off, apart from Richie Sambora, Jimmy Page, Pete Townsend and to some extent Slash I haven't heard as much music by other guitarists as I have Knopfler. Therefore my opinion may change if I hear a lot more music from other great guitarists suchs as Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, etc. I only needed to watch Live 8 to realise how good Dave Gilmour is, and he's probably now in my top ten, when before as I'd heard little of Pink Floyd I had no idea of his talents. Obviously the guys in my sig are all great guitarists with lots of ability. You could probably expect to find all of them, minus Keith Urban, in such lists. From listening to them/seeing them live I feel they have all really got it, and are very acomplished with the guitar. You could add more to the list such as Bryan May, John Squire, Kirk Hammit, etc, but then how far do you go?

Kirk Hammet's a joke.

But, all those lists are just as reliable as anyone elses opinion. There's no one greatest guitarist. There are good ones, but that is also a matter of taste. I for one think Eddie Van Halen often sounds awful when he's playing a solo. I know he sounds out of tune on purpouse, but it still sounds bad to me.

I really hope this is a joke.

I'm not a huge fan of Metallica anymore, but Kirk Hammet is an amazing guitarist.

I agree.

C.C. is good at what he does (barely), is a great showman and is a lot of fun to watch play live. However, a great guitarist, he is not.
