Default How do you rate Tico as a drummer

Want to know what most people think, and also what the other drummers on this board think?

Well my step dad is a very skilled drummer, playing numerous cover bands and had his own band for 5 or 6 years opening up a couple times for black flag and the sex pistols. Anyway, he really likes bon jovi, but he says that he has never had a problem with their drumming. Its predictable, and easy to play. All though he says that's not a bad thing, he says that tico is nothing special. Just passing what he says.

Anyway, for the past few records at least, I blame jon.

I think that Tico's a technically skilled drummer tbh but he rarely shows it in Bon Jovi that much (particularly on studio tracks) as he plays what the songs require. A lot of the difficult things he plays live are actually played that well that they seem easier than they are too. In that respect, I think he's a very underrated musician.

We've had many a good drummer play for our band over the years and not many of them have been able to nail Tico's playing style. Some of the drummers we've auditioned have been technically amazing but as soon as any of them came out with the line, "Tico's playing is very straight forward," or something similar, it set off the warning bells immediately as it just showed how much they'd actually listened to some of the songs. KTF is one track in particular that we know trips up the majority of drummers, even the better ones.

I'm no drummer, but I think, just to name another example,Homebound train has a groove that's not really easy to play.
At least to my keyboardist ears

I think he is a brilliant drummer. 'The Circle' is the only album since 2000 were Tico shines.

When he is playing Live, though, he is immense. In some ways, he carries the band with his drumming because you very rarely hear him make a mistake.

i see tico as a very accomplished drummer who seldom gets to showcase his talent.

i think he's pretty well respected within the music industry though.

I think that Tico is a very firm and solid drummer, but definitely not a virtuoso. Apart from a few difficult patterns (KTF or GGDAWW) he does nothing special. Especially on the latter records (the circle included) his playing is indeed simple and predictable. Might even say boring, but that would be a little too harsh. Nonetheless, I do consider him a good drummer.

There isn't the complexity in Bon Jovi's songs which requires him to play anything radical. Remember, they're not Dream Theater (thank god).

Listen to Mr Sambo, if you haven't heard it before, that has some nice patterns.

There's a part during a soundcheck on when we were beautiful where jon and richie are talking but tico is playing some jazz beat and it's pretty awesome and shows what he is capable of.

Just because he doesn't play it doesn't mean he's not capable.

Saying that, the 2 times I've seen jovi and thought they weren't up to scratch it's been because tico has been off and playing behind the beat for whatever reason.

Maybe he should let loose once in a while and allow himself to show off, would be good for their cred.

It seems like since 2000 the band is very conservative with their instrumentation and that has hurt their street cred.
