Regardless of your own personal opinion of the song, you seem to be ignoring the fact that it was an absolutely enormous hit, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if it was the most well known Aerosmith song among the general public. So no, it's not like comparing Because We Can and Livin' On A Prayer in the slightest

And as with many more people.

Bon Jovi is known for It's My Life, yes. But not much more. People will buy a greatest hits with Prayer, Wanted and Ill Be There For You. Take out those songs and nobody cares.
This is a funny example, because Aerosmith did exactly that and the record was a massive success. They released "Big One's" in 94, it only had their 80's and early 90's hits, and it sold over 4 million in the US alone. I have no doubt a BJ album of post 2000 hits would sell. It's My Life wasn't their only major hit, Have A Nice Day and Who Says You Can't Go Home both hit # 1 in the US, You Want to Make a Memory was a top ten hit, and several more were hits internationally. That plus 4 new songs? It would sell.

I have a 'Cross Road +' playlist, and a 'Cross Road 2' playlist.

The Cross Road + playlist has the full Cross Road album plus Born to Be My Baby, This Ain't A Love Song, Something For The Pain, Lie to Me, The Radio Saved My Leife Tonight.

The Cross Road 2 Playlist is basically all the singles released between 2000-2010 (accept for TRSMLT which I thought fit better in the previous playlist because it was a 90's era track) plus the 4 new Greatest Hits tracks.

More recently I made a 'Cross Road 2 + WAM' playlist, which adds the entire WAN album to the CR2 playlist. I've enjoyed listening to it on shuffle for the past few weeks now.

But the thing is, Aerosmith was MUCH MUCH MUCH more successful in the 80's and early 90's than Bon Jovi has been in the last 10 years. The late 80's and early 90's is arguably Aerosmith's most successful period, period.

I've got no idea where you've got your chart data from, but Bon Jovi haven't had a number 1 hit song in over 20 years, with the exception of Who Says You Can't Go Home making it to the number 1 spot in the country charts.

As for the rest, I agree with Twinfan. Besides, Big Ones only contained the 80's and 90's hits because it was released on Geffen records, who didn't have the rights to the seventies stuff.

Salaam Aleikum,
Sebastiaan

Yes, Aerosmith was massively successful in the late 80's early 90's, and yes they were more successful in the US at that time than Bon Jovi has been in the US over the last 10 years. Internationally it's a different story though, Bon Jovi has had 5 multiplatinum albums internationally between 2000-2010.

Per Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bon_Jovi_discography
Crush is 11x Platinum Internationally
Bounce is 6x
HAND is 7x
Lost Highway 4x
The Circle 3x

That's pretty dam successful. And while Aerosmith's Big One's was only a compilation of 3 multi platinum albums*, a Cross Road 2 would be a compilation of 5.

You're right, I was mistaken about the singles hitting number 1 in the US. But who cares why they put Big One's out without the 70's hits, the point is they did and it was very successful.
