The little symbol? These are roman numerals - and those in lowercase imply minor chords.

If you are in the key of E major / c# minor:
I V vi IV = E B c#m A
vi IV I V = c#m A E B

Lol didn't realise roman numerals referred to chords so it never clicked.

And considering some of the best songs ever written have a fairly basic structure, I don't see it as a big problem. It's more the formula that bothers me too - yet probably the most formulaic song in the catalogue, Have A Nice Day, people seem to love on here so go figure.
See, that's a civilized reply. I guess for anyone who doesn't understand the symbols but wants to understand them, a quick Google will do.

The beauty of music is that there's so many ways to experience it. Ever since I've began playing guitar, I've started listening to it in a more technical aspect. In this way, I've never loved/appreciated music more. Since I dig deep into the technicalities, I notice this stuff all the time. Not necessarily horrible things, but just things worth nothing.

I was just hoping to start up a nice music discussion, contrary to the other shit that's been flung around here as of late.

PS: yeah, I do love Have a Nice Day. :P

I envy you guys the talent. I can write lyrics and do it very, very well (though sometimes like JBJ seem to rehash older stuff sometimes) but I don't have that musicality - I'd love to be able to play guitar and have tried, even own a Richie Strat, but just haven't got the co-ordination. I've tried keyboards, even the sax. None of it seems to work for me or maybe I just don't have the patience - even though I'd be happy enough just to put some basic music to my words.

I think this is sometimes why I have differences in opinion to some songs than say Gav or Seb, or any other musician does. You guys listen to music in very different ways than I do - you analyse it much, much more - where I care only about the feeling it gives me and can I lose myself in the song.

Which is kinda' weird since surely that's the exact feeling that anyone who plays music like you guys wants to instill in all of us who can't. And I really don't want to understand it - it's beautiful, magical and mystical - like the trick of an illusionist, if I knew how it worked, it might just ruin it.

Oh, And I though it the Roman Numeral count for as may times as you've been a dick around here.... Whoops, I really am an idiot. Good thing Kathleen was here to clear that up or else I'd be totally lost.

Anyway, right now, the only problem with Bon Jovi is Jon and these repeated Chord Progressions are the least of their problems.

They suffer live because of his voice. The songs sound like shit to begin with and then he tries short cuts from Mispronunciations of lyrics to strategic set-lists.

The albums have the same problem. Jon's political passion has grown so much since '05, I think he is somewhat disgusted with his prior work. He (fake) laughs at himself whenever he sees a picture of him from the 80's. So strike one is this optimistic song writing that contains no creativity. The second issue is his vocals. He can't pump out a song with passion anymore. Thank You was his last real ballad attempt and it's so flat in comparison to Always and BOR. This leads into the 3rd issue which is overproduction.

Lets now sum all this up. No money is made through albums anymore so why kill yourself making one. It's all about touring so make simple catchy music that is easy to sing and effortless. Rely heavily on your producer to cover everything up and that's what we have now. If one becomes a hit, great! If not, oh well. Jon made his mark in music through 3 decades. He has nothing left to prove anymore.

I was listening to NJ yesterday and realized that this band / Jon does not exist anymore..... I now have 2 favorite bands. Bon Jovi from '83 to '01 and Bon Jovi '02 to current. Crush ends band 1 and Bounce begins band 2.

It's like someone who loves Van Halen. Most would agree Dave was better and defines Van Halen but Sammy was still enjoyable and kept the band going strong. That's what I have now with Bon Jovi

No more personal insults. Seriously, cut it out. Not just you, everyone. It's like a full time job getting grown adults to behave.

I seriously don't understand this post. I want to discuss this topic, which happens to be about the musicality. Is that a problem?

I still lose myself in the song, and by no means do I mean to instill my way of listening to music in you or anyone else. That's great if you don't want to understand it. Sometimes, I feel it might be better if I didn't.
