If your 1st album doesn't hit the top 10 you're out.
I suppose it depends on the size of the label. If it were Island, Geffen or Columbia then they might drop them after the first album, but if it were a minor label they would probably stick with them. Probably they'd know that the guys have talent, and want to hang on to it, and hope they can make it big, which sells lots of records and makes this minor record company a whole lot bigger.

with New Jersey- then yeah i do think they would.

the more "popier" sounding Jovi arent doing that so well. sure pop sells but there are a lot more people heading towards the other direction. the ones that get success so quickly dont often last- so think they're success would be a working progress. not right up there with the big boys so early.

With SWW def yes, but not with Bj or Farenheit. Chris is right, the music business doesnt allow for two "flop" albums these days and they would have been dropped.

I agree with that! They are very versitile songwriters but they would have different influences today than they did back in the 80's. They might (and that's a big might) make it because they would still have the same work ethic in them. And hopefully they would be like Nickelback rather than N-Sync!
I see what both of you are saying. I just don't want BJ to sound any different. That's why I stick with no. Releasing the same stuff, they did back then, today, would not make them anywhere near as big as they are.
Although this whole "what would be if" thing is speculating, in my eyes, it is way TOO speculating what they would sound like today, what record label would stick or not stick to them etc.
If they would do the same today while satrting out, they wouldn't make it. Time and place are wrong (for style ).

had a big conversation about this exact topic with my old class on my music business course cause none of them liked bon jovi and said would they be big today if they were starting out.

and no they wouldn't. if you take off the rose tinted specs for a minute...

it's an industry, it's their to make money and not many new rock bands make alot of money.

1 flop album won't get you dropped unless it's an absolute disaster but 2 definetely will.

It's my life would have made them, but apart from that, there's not much they're bringing out just now that i reckon would get them to the level they are now, 20 years down the line if they were starting out.

however, you could argue just about any band from the beatles to the stones to oasis wouldn't make it if they were starting out today. timing's got a huge part to do with it. there's many an estate agent or security guard who could have been the next david bowie had they been a bout a few years earlier or later.

Jim what started this thread was a similar one on a Bruce board I am on about Bruce and the conclusion was about the same. Bruce also had two low sales albums before BTR even if they are masterpieces. He had time to develop just like Bon Jovi. Today it would not have happened- I can see him still being a singer songwriter but with more of a cult following if anything. The climate today is just too different.

to be honest, I can't see SWW in particular selling even half of the 25ish million it did sell int the 80's. Albums just dont sell that much anymore, even 'The Eminem Show' didnt break the 20 mill mark if im not mistaken...
