I'd sayhe's being very fair. Richies addictions were certainly putting alot of stress on the band, probably gave Jon more than a few sleepless nights, and the truth is Jon didn't have the luxury of just being Richies friend or his brother. He also had to look out for the band, the business, the brand.
Seems to me he took the high road, he stuck it out and helped Richie work through it all, most bosses would have fired Richie or at least laid him off until he was fit to work, in this case until he was clean and sober.
The article does come off making Jon sound arrogant, but my guess is that is the writing and writers doing not Jon's.
Agreed and the fact is Jon is arrogant...has been since I started following the band in 1985. But, what lead singer of a band isn't...whether admitted or not.

I'm not an idiot and couldn't care less whether it was Jon or Richie. I just have little sympathy for someone when they are in the position to get all the help they need, especially like you said, as it has probably been going on for a long, long time. I understand addictions pretty well in fact, I've had enough of them in my own family. Maybe that's hardened me against people who get themselves in that situation...and if I come across as harsh because of that, so be it.

Richie was a mess, and I'm really, really glad to see he has sorted himself out. My original point stays the same, Jon would have had a lot of commercial success whether or not he had Richie, or Bon Jovi at all.

Probably true to a certain extent, but I do think that having the "band", has kept him more ambitious than he may well have been if he was on his own. His career would certainly be different, I think some of hischoices would have been very different if he had been a solo artist rather than the head of a band. The bottom line is they do their best work together, and they know it.

Does this really need to become another St. Richie vs. Satan Jon argument. Jon's arrogant, always has been. He talks out of his ass a lot. But, they also stood by Richie, and if Jon/band really helped Richie then all the power to them. Frankly, Richie seems 2000000 times better now, and the band is making music, and that's really what I care about.

Pardon my language, but this band would be so pussified without Sambora that I'd rather not fathom the thought. And while I agree, it's Richie's own fault he got into bad spots and it can't be denied his efforts since These Days have been pretty average, this idea that he is the key reason for the band's fall from rock to pop is utterly ridiculous. That will always fall on the shoulders of one arrogant, insecure man- that being JBJ

Richie certainly had a hand in the change over to pop. Not that I think he was the majority of the reason but he had a lot to do with it too.

Richie's second solo album was totally aduld contemporary, which is what the band has sounded like since Crush as well.

It's the band's new direction. Not only Jon's.
Without Richie Bon Jovi's done, without Tico or David, just not so much.
