Yeah, sorry, I got a little side-tracked! I think any band needs to think about the commercial side of it, even the biggest bands could be dropped if they don't make any money.
After a five year gap, they needed to make sure the first song was enough to remind the old fans they could still rock, but it was modern enough to hook the younger fans who hadn't ever heard Bon Jovi before. IML covered all the bases, and was pretty much guaranteed to make money as well as make an impact. They had the option to do something else, but it made sense to do what they did.

Simple in 2000 the made a choice, if it was for money, popularity or whatever they changed their sound.
I always had the idea that they did this for a reason and not because they really wanted to, i think
they don't really record the songs they want to or how they wanted to sound eventually

I rather have the Def Leppard idea....

...I can hear Jon saying.."the reason we've stood the test of time is because we've written what we do best and it's from the heart...not changed our sound to fit in with trends"

If this is true then they have inwhittingly changed their sound to be more main stream....Maybe when it comes to choosing the final tracklist they've played safe...or been chicken!!

They definately don't seem to do anything that is new or unusual anymore....I would be blown away if we were to get a 9.52min drycounty style tooone.....Good ole raw rock'n'roll!...hoping it's not a thing of the past

To be somewhat fair to them, they've never exactly been a defiantly uncommercial band, and the slightly less mainstream and more artistic route that they took during the 90s was possibly the exception rather than the rule ... It's My Life is indeed very commercial and most likely aimed at getting airplay and getting the album to sell, but then so were the first two singles from Slippery really ... and in both cases, they did the job. If anything, It's My Life was probably a concious attempt to bring Livin' On A Prayer right up to date, rather than going to poppy "depths" that they'd never gone to before.

And it's not like they've never adapted their sound ... for Keep The Faith, while it wasn't in keeping with what was popular at the time, it was more than likely influenced by it ... it's not like they did a Def Leppard and released a hair metal album after grunge had hit big (and thank God for that too!)

Do I prefer the 90s stuff to the 00s? Sure. But everything that they've written has most likely been a result of commercialism, although perhaps to different extents at different times

They want to develop as songwriters, and they will look to modern influences, what's in the chart, what's popular, and they will experiment, some songs will have great lyrics, some a bit shoddy. It's a good thing, as much as I love These Days, I wouldn't want their next five albums to be These Days Part 2-6. The downside to that being it's gonna be hard for the next album to match one of such a high standard.

But the truth is that they have been writing the same songs for different albums since Crush: IML, Everday and HAND are the same song. They've tried and failed to re-write ALways with TYFLM and AALY. With the new album it looks like they've tried to re-write WYCGH with I Love This Town.
They may not be doing it intentionally but it has been happening.

I'm not entirely sure how TYFLM and AALY are attempted re-writes of Always when the former two are "happy" love songs and the latter is a "painful" love song .... if anything, TAALS is more of a rewrite of Always ... which in turn is a rewrite of IBTFY / Never Say Goodbye

It's My Life is a phenomenal song. Don't slate one of the greatest stadium rockers of all time, everyone can relate to it.
