I remember hearing this song for the first time on the radio, I immediately knew it was Jovi, and I thought O_O: JOVI IS BACK! and I was damn right, they were so BIG with this one, good times...
I like everything about this song and 'cause it's pretty simple as that: "It's my life" and as JBJ has said “That song became this universal theme of empowerment.”

I'll go with this too

It's My Life, Everyday, and Beautiful Day could all essentially be the same song so why is one loved, one hated, and one just Okay?

Because one came first, the second was a carbon copy to capitalize on the theme and the third wasnt released as a single. It's the motives. IML sticks out like a sore thumb on Crush and there are a bunch of sound-alikes on Bounce.

Agree with OP.

While I remember feeling fatigued from it some 7-8 years ago due to all the similarly-sounding songs that were released afterwords, it's only gotten better the past few years.

It's an absolute smash and it deserves all the success that it has given to Bon Jovi.

Jon and Max need to work together again.

I know you're joking but I think in ratios. If Desmond wrote 30 song with them and 5 are stinkers I'm okay. If you write two and one stinks never again haha. Complicated is fine arrangement wise but "Black is white and up is down" HARD PASS for me.

Fair point, but I've always blamed Jon for that line. Probably because it's from the same album as the horrendous "remember that you're perfect, God makes no mistakes" line.
For some time, I've had the feeling that Jon wanted to come across intellectual in his songwriting by putting contradicting lines/metaphors next to each other, even though that didn't really work (I remember thinking that either somewhere on the Circle or on WAN).

I'd say it started with Crush. The trend he had of writing about a woman no one can explain especially (She's a Mystery, Mystery Train, Wildflower) but I think you're right. Regardless of who wrote that specific line of Complicated the entire thing is a stinker to me. Cliche lyrics and an over used chord structure.
